Re: Those parents who don't have a dog
All of things that you listed are why but mostly because DH and Jacob are highly allergic.

Re: Those parents who don't have a dog
We would love to have a dog, but don't due to space limitations. We live in a small 2 bedroom with 2 adults, 1 8 yr old and a baby on the way. Until we get a bigger place a dog is out of the picture for us for the time being

Re: Those parents who don't have a dog
I love dogs and grew up with having them.
However, they are A LOT of work. So we have a cat for the moment.
DS is wild about dogs and loves my parent's dog so that keeps him happy for now. When the kids are older I plan to get a little spaniel or something becuase I want them to have the experience of growing up with one.

Re: Those parents who don't have a dog
We have 2 dogs which we had 1 year prior to DS.
If I had to do it again, I would NOT have dogs. Not until much later.
I feel I have 3 kids. Dogs puking, dogs wrestling in the LR while DS is around, dog eating other dog poop, dogs waking at 5:30am to go out, dogs crying at 7am to eat, etc....
I have had dogs all my life, so does DH. I "begged" DH for the dogs. I can only blame myself.
ETA: I am VERY allergic to dogs. My dogs are mixed with poodle gene. There are "hypoallergenic" and don't shed. The poodle (non shedder) mix is a dominant gene by 95%. So any breed mixed with a poodle has 95% chance to be hypoallergenic and a non shedder.

Re: Those parents who don't have a dog
There are many many reasons why I don't have a dog and don't ever want to get one. My reasons: the whole poop in the yard thing; I don't want dog hair in my house and on our clothes; I don't like the barking; I can't stand the licking or the wet nose, and the thought of dog saliva on my baby/children makes me nauseaous; and I don't need any more jobs or responsibilities around here -- no matter how many times DH or DC tell me they will take care of the dog, I know it will fall on me.

Re: Those parents who don't have a dog
I dont really like dogs...I like puppies, but not big smelly slobbery dogs...something about them skeeves me and I wouldn't want one in my house...not to mention the attention, the walking, the poop picking up...etc.

Re: Those parents who don't have a dog
I think you should def. get one. She LOVES dogs....it would make her so happy! You see how good Abby is. She's such an amazing little puppy. Yes - dogs are HARD WORK in the beginning but IMO it's totally worth it!
You want Abby for a week when we go on vacation for a trial?
ETA: I really really disliked animals before I had my own. Once it's your own it's soooo different. I never ever thought I could love an animal!
ETA: my dog doesn't shed at all!

Re: Those parents who don't have a dog
Added mess is my main reason. The thought of hair in & on everything makes me cringe.
Dh does have allergies so that's another reason but he doesnt want the mess either. I can't imagine a dog scratching up my floors and tracking mud/sand/water etc all through the house.
I'd have an outside dog if the winters weren't so bad here.

Re: Those parents who don't have a dog
DH is allergic to animals. BUT, he would not want to have one anyway because of the responsibilty that goes along with them. We go away a lot, so it would be hard to find someone to take care of the dog.
I love dogs, having grown up with them, and would love one, but it will never happen.

Re: Those parents who don't have a dog
1. I have two kids and I'm not cleaning up after a dirty dog. 2. Pet hair...I already have enough hair falling out of my head, I don't need furball tumbleweed. 3. Smells...I hate wet dog smell 4. My wood floors. I like them just as they are. 5. Pee accidents...I like my carpets.
A dog is not for me...thanks.

Re: Those parents who don't have a dog
too much extra work and responsibility! i really wanted to get a dog before we had kids, but i'm so glad we didn't get one. two kids are enough to take care of! another problem for us is that we live in nj, but go to LI a lot to see family and we would have to find something to do with the dog.

Not home enough during the day, we both work full-time
same here - too much responsibility at this time - maybe later on - we would love one.

So many reasons!
I never had dogs growing up. I'm not a huge animal lover at all. Dogs are expensive. Dogs make your house dirtier. It's a pain to board your dog when you travel. They need a ton of time and attention.
We have a dog, but these are all of the reasons why I hate having one. I wish I would have stood my ground when DH kept whining about wanting a dog.

Re: Those parents who don't have a dog
Always had a dog growing up. We may get one some day, but today is not that day.
To be honest, we are gone long stretches of the day and we travel.
The poop issue is part of it-but I never rely thought it though.
DD (and DH) would love one but I just don't think we need the extra stress in our lives at this time.

Re: Those parents who don't have a dog
DH and I both love animals and we have a cat but it's just too much responsibilitly especially that we both work full time. Maybe sometime in the furture when DS is older we will consider it but def. not for at least 5 years.
If the poop is the only think holding you back is it possible to create a small fenced in area in your back yard for the dog to go?

Re: Those parents who don't have a dog
We have a cat who is anti-social and HATES all other animals. The two children, cat and husband I have is all that I can care for at this point. IF we got a dog I would want it to be over the summer when I could be home more. I am nervous about how rough Squishy is on my cat I can only imagine what he would do to a dog that could possibly bite him. (He crawled up and belly flopped on top of my 8lb cat and laid there while the cat was pinned to the ground, as just one example).
The other reason is my husband and I do not share the same view as pets. I see them as part of the family, he sees them as disposiable and if we don't like it we can get rid of the dog. The cat was his prior to us dating and if he had it his way the cat would be thrown out the door, my attitude (and I am not a cat fan at all) is you took her in she's our for the rest of her life. So knowing how he is with animals I am nervous about bring one into our house.

Re: Those parents who don't have a dog
I like the idea of a dog, I would hate the reality. We just adopted out our cat - no way we could take on a dog: too needy & too messy.

Re: Those parents who don't have a dog
It's funny b/c I've always loved dogs. I had a dog growing up and always swore I would have one as an adult. Now that I am an adult and have a son, I don't think I want a dog. I still love dogs but it's just so much extra added responsibility and they can be just as messy as a child. It's def. not an option for us now anyways b/c our apartment isn't big enough. Maybe I'll reconsider if we ever get a house b/c ds really really loves animals.

We have 3 cats. thats enough. I like dogs, but don't ever want one. They are too high maintenance. I don't want to always worry about getting home to let the dog out.

Re: Those parents who don't have a dog
There are so many reasons - all that the OP posted, but above all I don't have it in me to have another pet.
I had 2 cats and in the past 2 years I've had to put both to sleep. And **I'M** the one who has to do it, not DH. I just can't handle the heartbreak. It hurts me way too much because I mourn them like people.
When I put my Bubba down in November I told DH no dogs, not ever... because he really wants one and he thinks DD will love to have one too. No.Fricken.Way.
