Do you think your dr wanted you to have a c-section?

I truly don't believe the drs in my practice prefer to give c-sections. DS was late and I was told many times that they do not like to induce, natural labor is better. When DS was born my dr was delivering another baby at the same time. After 3 hours of pushing they decided she should have a c-section. I heard him discussing it with the nurses and they felt bad about it.

Re: Spinoff to the Business of Being Born post

I truly believe that at the point I was at a c-section was necessary. The Dr who was delivering was fully on board with how I wanted to deliver...natural. She was extremely supportive of it all, but when 17 hours had passed and I was running into a whole host of problems, there was nothing I could do.

So...in the end, it was necessary.

But I do feel a lot of people are pushed into it when it is unecessary.

Re: Spinoff to the Business of Being Born post

I know for a FACT my doctor did not want me to have a C-section and that he did not want to give me one. We had discussed my birth plan in great detail. But there was an immediate danger to my health and an emergency c-section was needed.

He encouraged me to try a VBAC with my 2nd.. but there were complications surrounding my insurance that kind of ruled that out.

Re: Spinoff to the Business of Being Born post

No way or he would have done it wayyyy earlier.

I had a C after over 24 hours of labor, 2 hours of pushing, a fever, ridiculously high blood pressure and all sorts of other complications (baby was fine.. I was the one with all the trouble). He only did the C after she STILL hadnt dropped after the two hours of pushing with no epi and me screaming and crying that I couldnt stand the pain anymore.

I elected to have a c section . one doc was fine with it bc she chose to do the same with her kids, my other doc was surprised and gave me all the risks but was ultimately ok with it. the doc that was on call was verrrrrrrry against it! so I guess it all depends on the doc

This was my worst fear, that's why I chose the C section. were you ok with this, or would you have wanted the c section earlier?

Re: Spinoff to the Business of Being Born post

nope, not at all. he also let me push for 5 hours and told me i could push as long as i wanted as long as the baby wasn't in distress.

i had the option of scheduling a c-section because of a prior surgery i had that might have caused complications during DS's birth. i opted to try a vaginal birth, and i'm glad i did. but i'm glad my obgyn was open to the possibility due to my prior history.

No my c-section was a necessity and was not planned until I went into labor 3 days before my scheduled induction. There was a chance my son could have experienced birth trauma due to a prolapsed umbilical cord if my water broke.

Re: Spinoff to the Business of Being Born post

I was in a bad bad place labor wise...I felt that maybe my Dr. could have tried a LITTLE bit more or harder, and I wish she had, but I do think in the end I was not going to be able to deliver naturally( my cervix was sealed shut with scar tissue)....

I do think though there are MANY unneccesary c/s's these days and there always will be.

Re: Spinoff to the Business of Being Born post

DS was breech and we even tried the version to turn him, but he wasn't moving. They wouldn't deliver breech so it wasn't an issue.

As much as I am against elective c-sections, I heard a story the other day about a v-birth gone bad that would make me jump back on the table without a second thought.

No - the doctors in the practice I use seem to be more pro-vaginal births.

DS was on the larger side and was having a hard time getting his head in place but the doctor wanted to wait as long as possible and was generous with my epi. There was never a danger and I was in fact able to deliver him vaginally...she told me I would prefer it and she was right. Meanwhile I was definitely entertaining the idea of a C-section.

Re: Spinoff to the Business of Being Born post

While I don't think that my dr is pro c-section, and after 36 hours of labor he let me decide that I wanted one, I do feel that they don't exactly let you labor in a way that will help you have a natural birth. I think they use too many interventions, and the hospitals don't exactly encourage you to get into different positions and walk, at least not in my experience.

Re: Spinoff to the Business of Being Born post

I really did not think about it much until I saw movie.

It was a light bulb moment.

A week before due date, I have appt.

did growth sono, est big.

And he never dropped, he was completely in my ribs still, not in position at all.

At that appt, he said we will schedule c-section. I was shocked. I fought it for 5 minutes and was told his only job is to deliver a healthy baby. That he did not believe I was going to labor anytime soon, that I appear to be too narrow and he's too big.

Asked about inducing, he said no. That it would cause baby distress and then end up in emergency c-section anyway.

I agreed to it. So Dec 18 was my due date, he wanted to do it on Dec 15, I said no, atleast give me till my due date to see if anything changes.

I can't help but to think that since I had no progress at that point that maybe dr feared it would roll into christmas eve/day...because that would have been my week overdue mark.

who knows.

Thank God I did have a perfect c-section. Baby was 9.7. It was painfree. Recovery was a breeze.

Then I watched the movie. I should have been given the week. That's what I feel robbed of.

My sister in WA had a completely different experience. she was 12 days overdue. Her blood pressure was high. They induce her. She had zero pain meds, labored for the most part in bathtub at hospital. She's my sister, I can't imagine our bone structures are that different...she was able to go 12 days...

The only time c-section came up during my pregnancy was when my placenta was low, covering my cervix. It moved up by my ultrasound at 32 weeks.

I was in early labor on my own when I was induced. They wouldn't let me eat or drink because there was a remote possibility I'd need a c-section but that was it. Everything about my progress and the baby said there was no need for c-section at the time and my doctors never pushed it.

I wasn't being pushed for a c-section, but I felt like I was definitely being pushed for an epidural.

I had explained to one ob in the practice that I wanted to try it without the pain medication. She was very condescending about it. I don't know if it's that she had just had her first child that year but she made it known that I was not going to be able to do it. I mentioned her comments to one of the other doctors & he rolled his eyes & said it wasn't true. I hoped with all of my heart to get one of the other doctors in the practice to deliver.

During labor, I wasn't that bad. I mean it hurt but I wasn't screaming or crying for the epidural. I was just very mellow & riding the waves to the contractions as best I could. That doctor was on call & every time she entered my room, she was trying to push the anesthesiologist on me. I was pretty annoyed.

I didn't end up needing anything but it was with no thanks to her.Chat Icon I do think given I saved my insurance company thousands of dollars, they should have at least opted to pay for the birthing class that helped me with it.

Re: Spinoff to the Business of Being Born post

I had same reaction from my OB early on when I introduced the thought of a drugfree birth.

He said there was no reason for it and he doesn't recommend it.Chat Icon

Later on I brought it up again.

He said when I start screaming, he will start screaming for epi immediately.

I didn't see the movie, but I definitely did not think my dr wanted me to have a c-section...it never came up while I was in labor. I was induced because of low fluid about a week shy of my due date. We talked about pain management, but never a c-section. DS was born vaginally after an hour of pushing, 21 hours after my first cervadil.

My doctor did NOT want me to have a c-section. She constantly told me that the recovery was so much harder. At the hospital I was in labor for 30 hours and hadn't progressed past 4 cm for 12 hours before finally they gave in (after mne begging and crying) and let me have a c/s.

Re: Spinoff to the Business of Being Born post

I absolutely needed to have a c-section. Since I was hemoragging, they needed to get DD out of me as soon as possible.

They gave me time to either dilate on my own or stop contractions on my own.

I never stop contracting, but I never progressed past 4 cms.

They waited as long as they could without putting DD or myself in danger.

I think I got to the hospital arond 1:30-1:45 and had my c/s at about 6:15.

So yes it was necessary.

My doctor did not want to induce me as he knew it would eventually lead to a c-section. Unfortunately, my blood pressure was continuing to increase and they had to induce which eventually led to a c-section. It was a good thing too because 2 days later I developed severe pre-eclampsia so I am grateful things went the way they did.

Re: Spinoff to the Business of Being Born post

I had no choice. I had HELLP syndrome and was minutes away from liver failure. Chat Icon I was no where near ready for delivery, cervix was completely closed but if I did not have my DD immediately I would not be alive.

dr. said she is all for natural delivery and is not an alarmist..but in my case she said you have NO choice, you are getting a c-section and RIGHT NOW.

Very scary......

I am 95% sure that I was pushed into a c-section. I was not really given the option to even try to deliver vaginally.

As for my OB, she was pro-vaginal birth, and it worked for me, but we were on the same page that if I needed a section, that's the route we would have gone.
