Does your newborn grunt and make noises?

DS is 3 weeks old and when i lay him on his back to sleep he makes all this grunting noises and all. I look at him and looks like he is stretching with his arms and all so now i have him on his side and he seems to be doing the same thing. In the begining i used to think it was because he was trying to go to bathroom but he went and is still doing this. I just hope he isnt having trouble breathing or something like that.

I think that is perfectly normal. My DS made all KINDS of noises inlcuding grunting. I remember he used to "click" a lot if that makes sense, I can't think of how else to describe it. But it was the weirdest thing.

If he was breathing REALLY fast or his sucking his belly in while breathing really fast, then I would be concerned.

MY DD squeaks, grunts you name it...she's the loudest baby ever....my mom was concerned at first but Dr said its perfectly normal...it's sort of cute and funny and weird all at the same time...LOL

We call DD our little monster because she is always growling at us lol

My DD did this...I wasn't sure either if it was normal. She was also very gassy..and that would make her grunt. Turns out the formula wasn't agreeing with her. Once we switched this behavior got 90% better. Just a thought...but it could be nothing but newborn noises.

Yes! She can be quite noisy sometimes. My DH likes to imitate her...it's pretty funny.

Yes yes yes lol. DD was a preemie and would make grunting noises all the time so this sounds completely normal

Yes, DS does the same thing. I keep asking the doctor, and she keeps saying its normal.

I personally think it's gas..because recently DS has started to pass gas after grunting and scrunching up..and boy do I mean gas

I BF, but sometimes supplement with formula, and I think that made it worse. So now I switched from Similac advance to Enfamil Gentlease..and have been giving him some baby gas-x. It's only been one day, so I have yet to see a significant change, but I hope it helps.

I was actually going to post this too...

DS is so noisy all the time...even when he is sleeping. We've taken to sleeping in the living room because he's so noisy at night and DH has to get up for work in the morning.

I'm glad it's normal.

OH YES!!! Grunts and squeaks all night long! I asked the baby nurse we have right now if it's gas and she said based on what she's seen with DD sometimes it is, but most often it's not, newborns do that alot.

Yep! Emma is 3 weeks also and she does the same thing. Grunting for no reason, or b/c she has to burp or poop! Perfectly normal!

Yes. DD did it ALL THE TIME first 2-3 months or maybe even more.

THank you so much ladies for the reassurance. Maybe i will be able to sleep a little more and not jump out of bed everytime i hear it.

Yes!! The other night DD kept DH up all night b/c he kept checking on her.. he was kept thinking something was wrong.. I must have been soo tired that I didnt hear a thing.

Totally normal - DD grunted in her sleep until she was about 3-4 months old!!
