Pg's and Moms that Suffer from Migraines....

I was an occasional (yet horrible when they come) migraine sufferrer before becoming pregnant.
With my first pregnancy I was lucky & didn't get ANY migraines, but so far with my 2nd pregnancy I've had 3 or 4, the latest one lasting an intense 24+ hours.Chat Icon
I obviously can't take the normal migraine meds that actually work, I was wondering if there are any other women out there that are suffering w/ me & if so how do you handle them? (esp. with a very active 3 year old to take care of & doesn't understand why Mommy is so sick).Chat Icon
I'd appreciate any advice.

I have had such intense migraines this preg so I know how you feel Chat Icon

Sipping regular coke helps so does standing or even sitting in a hot shower. Also try resting in a dark room- hard with a toddler, I know!

I wear sunglasses when driving because the glare triggers it.

They are awful! Let me know if you come upon something else that works. Hang in there Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon

Oh guys!!! Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon I am so sorry you are both suffering!!

Knock on wood, I've been so lucky not to have one yet since pregnant! I've had regular headaches (which I almost never had pre-pregnancy) pretty often but if I had a migraine I don't know what I would do as Imitrex is the only thing that gives me ANY relief.

The only thig that would help me was a cup to two of coffee which would be washing down 2 extra strength tylenol.

I have been a migraine sufferer FOREVER...we are TTC but not yet preg but I have a 3 yr old ds...

My high risk dr advised that I can take Vicodin or Fioricet (both are tylenol based) in case of a terrible migraine. Not something you want to take often while preg but a migraine can be debilitating and can really cause a great stress on your body... Another thing that really helped me and is safe while preg is predisone (an anti-inflamatory) - if you are having terrible, recurrent migraines it might help to break the cycle...

HTH!!! I have a great neuro in great neck that was referred by my high-risk OB if you want the name - FM me!

It may sound weird, but usually what helps me the most it to put an ice pack on my head. Generally when I get a migraine (like today) I get it on either the right or left temple. I was at work and holding the icepack on it.

Re: Pg's and Moms that Suffer from Migraines....

I had a horrible one over the weekend, so I know how you feel and Im sorry!!!! I called my doc and my OB today, the OB said I should see a neurologist Chat Icon so Im looking into that. And my primary care dr said that she could give me tyelenol w/codeine or other migraine meds. They are all considered category C (I think please dont quote) which is risk/benefit.

I would normally take Relpax, but my insurance doesnt cover much of it anymore and its about 300$ so I havent refilled it. The dr. gave me another one similar.. and I was told I could take it but just know the risks. I think its the same with vicodin and other things similar, there ARE risks but sometimes for the mom the benefits out weigh the risks. If that makes any sense.. Chat Icon

Thanks for all the advice/recs.Chat Icon
My OB recommended Tylenol w/codeine as well, and said Relpax was ok to take for the nausea., but nothing seemed to help this one, it was a doozy!

Lori- You are incredible, thank you for the offer, I may actually take you up on it if I get one like I got the other day.
You will get massages for life for helping me out!!!!!Chat Icon Chat Icon

Re: Pg's and Moms that Suffer from Migraines....

I was getting a lot of headaches when I was pregnant with DD and my doctor told me to have a small cup of tea (caffeinated) in the am and see if that works. It did and I had it for most of my first trimester.

Re: Pg's and Moms that Suffer from Migraines....

In all honesty I have yet to find something that helps. I've tried tylenol, ice, heat, massage, baths, showers, darkness and nothing really works. The only thing that gives me relief is if I can get myself to sleep. Other than that I am still struggling for a cure myself Chat Icon Chat Icon Hugs to you because I know how debilitating and frustrating they are!!
