fighting naps and sleeping HORRIBLY at night

please ladies i don't know what else to do.

he is clean, dry, full, and not in pain. he is a little bit stuffy but not really. i thought maybe he was gassy but he doesn't seem to be in discomfort and he gets mylicon with all of his formula bottles (which is usually at night before bed).

he is still waking up a ton at night for his pacifier, and now he doesn't want to nap in the afternoons.

he naps no problem in the morning for 1.5 - 2 hours.

what can i do? i know the story is sleep begets sleep... but he is not sleeping Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon

He's waking up because the pacifier is falling out.
Are you willing to take it away yet?

he is so young... only 5 months. i don't think i am ready for that yet. Chat Icon

plus i don't think that has much to do with the napping issue... he has the pacifier in his mouth, but then he starts talking and laughing, and that escalates to fussing and crying. Chat Icon

Chat Icon Sorry that you're going through this. I can totally relate and it s*cks! Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon

Unfortunately no advice for you. We had the same problem with ds. It wasn't until we did CIO that his sleeping at night and during the day got so much better.

Have you tried putting him down 15 minutes earlier than when you normally do it? They say that when they fight it... it's because they're already overtired.

Same here.

He went from being a great sleeper to being a crappy one and didn't return to great sleep until CIO.

Then he learned how to soothe himself.

i might have to try CIO a bit early. i KNOW he is fine because when i go to get him he is all smiles and laughs.

is 5 months too early to try and get him on some kind of schedule?

he wakes up for his AM feeing at 5:30 pretty much every day. i always put him back down so i can try and get some sleep. lately he has been talking/babbling in his crib for an hour and then crying b/c his diaper is dirty.

should i just be getting him up at that time? it would make SO much harder to get ready in the morning but i guess i could do it.

i need to get a sleep book Chat Icon

Well i bought quite a few sleep books and they didn't help me too much. Chat Icon Too confusing sometimes.

5 months is definitely not too early for a schedule.

what time does he go down at night? what about naps?

Normally when ds wakes that early (his normal is 6-6:30am), we basically ignore him until 6am. He doesn't cry or anything. Just hangs out. Will sometimes whine.

However this morning, he was up at 5:30 and my husband wanted another hour of sleep (he was home with him today), so he got up fed him, put him back in the crib and we all went back to sleep. Chat Icon

You have to do what works for you. So if you want him to go back down at 5:30 (which i would Chat Icon), then do that. Chat Icon

G had the same problem around this time. He was teething and had a growth spurt. He would sleep horribly for a few days, then fall back in to his routine until the next tooth or growth spurt. Maybe this is the reason?Chat Icon

It must have something to do with the age, because Anthony is doing the exact same thing now. Chat Icon Keeps fighting naps terribly. Yesterday he didn't nap for a total of 1 1/2 hrs all day!Chat Icon Chat Icon GLChat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon

Why don't you change him before the 5:30 feeding-keep everything dim and quiet so he knows its not time to get up-like don't talk to him at all except for soothing(shh etc.)

he is usually ready for bed around 7, 7:30pm. he wakes up to eat at 5:30am.

napping is ALL over the place. we are lucky if he takes 2 2-hour naps during the day... but sometimes he sleeps for 3 hours from about 10-1 and then doesn't nap again at all.

i really want him to have 2 naps for at least 1.5 hours each. he is just a happier kid the more he sleeps.

i am going to write out a schedule of sleeping and eating and see how that works.

Re: fighting naps and sleeping HORRIBLY at night

From what I read in Healthy Sleeping Habits, Happy Baby they should nap after being awake for 2-3 hours.

I just made Katelyns bedtime earlier bc she was getting too cranky by the time 7 o'clock came around, now its 6:30 and she wakes up at 6:30. I have followed this book since day 1.

Also, start to prepare her to sleep 30 min before its time. So here is our day:

6:30 - bottle
8:30 - soothe for nap. Literally I sit with her on the couch, no toys, must pacifier and she winds down.
9:00 in crib. When er pacifier falls ot, I go in, put itback and leave right away.
10:00 wakes up from nap

11:30 - soothe for next nap
12:00 in crib
1:00 wakes up

2:30 - soothe for next nap
3:00 in crib
4:00 wakes up

6:15ish - soothe for bedtime
6:30 - 6:45 in crib

The more sleep she gets, the better she sleeps.

Do you rock him to sleep? Or does he fall asleep on his own in the crib? do you try to put him down for another nap in the afternoon? What happens?

I can totally relate....my son is going to be 5 months next week & sleeps terribly. He naps good in the daytime, but does not sleep well at night. Last night he woke up every two hours; 11:30, 1:30, 3:30 & 5:30. I'm not sure if it's reflux, teething, or a growth spurt. Here's hoping we both can fiqure out and catch more Chat Icon!!!!

Good luck tonight!!

thank you for the scheduling example!

i rocked him to sleep last night because he had so much trouble falling asleep on his own, even with the pacifier, and i rocked him to sleep for his nap this afternoon. it's such a bad habit, though, i don't want to keep doing it.

i used to be able to put him down and he would be asleep within 10-20 minutes... not anymore!

he takes a nap after being awake for about 2.5 hours, any more and he gets VERY cranky.

Re: fighting naps and sleeping HORRIBLY at night

Are you saying that he sleeps from 730 - 530? If so that sounds great to me! You have to go in a few times to give him a pacifier but otherwise he sleeps okay?
