What are your thoughts on Valentine's Day?

My friends and I were talking, and my DH won't even be home the whole day, he has to work.

But he already knows that I really don't like V-day. To me it's a pointless, Hallmark holiday which forces people to do something they should be doing EVERY day, not just because a calendar tells you to.

Call me Negative Nancy, I just would rather a bunch of daffodils when they come up because my DH knows I love them than a dozen overpriced red roses because it's February 14th.

OK, soapbox moment over.....
How do you feel about it?

I am with you. We exchange a card and go out for dinner, but is it a big deal? Does our week revolve around it? Is it the be all, end all? Not at all.

We're the same as you. I don't think DH has ever given me flowers on Valentine's day. Some years he'll give me candy. Never a card.

Re: What are your thoughts on Valentine's Day?

if there is someone special in my life, i never go out on valentine's day. everything is overpriced and the service is bad/rushed.

would rather just hang out at home with a romantic movie.

then again, now that i'm single again... i would love a little attention Chat Icon

We don't make a big deal of it.

We usually go out for dinner the night before (which happens to be a Friday this year, which is our usual date night anyway).

I do like to get a card.. and I can't say I'd turn down some Godiva!

Exactly! In the past, we avoided the crowds by either going out the week before or the week after. Once we made the mistake of going out 2/14 and the food was bland, service was almost nonexistant, and we felt rushed. Now that we are homeowners, we'll be eating in Chat Icon.

Re: What are your thoughts on Valentine's Day?

I like it. But DH and I met on V day so it's special for us.

We SHOULD celebrate romance everyday, but don't so it's nice to take a day to do that. We used to go out, but are now old and boring (and wiser) so we beat the croweds a day or two before and stay in that night. I also told DH a few years ago that he is not allowed to buy flowers that day because the prices are nutsChat Icon I'd rather those on another day.

But if it's a day that makes us cuddle a few moments longer and talk about love, there's no harm.

I like holidays anyway- they make life more fun and make us take notice of passing time.

Re: What are your thoughts on Valentine's Day?

I like valentine's day.... sure it's a hallmark holiday (like mother's day and father's day), but the sentiment is sweet. IMO, it's only a hallmark holiday if you make it that way, KWIM?

We usually do something low key... like eat baked brie at home and split a bottle of wine....

Now, with Eryk, it's the perfect excuse to actually have a 'date' without the kid!

We are the same...We exchange cards and do dinner. For us, it truly is just another evening. Usually we order take out rather then going out.

We're intentionally going out to dinner on a day NEAR V-day, but not ON it because of all the crowds and prices.

Re: What are your thoughts on Valentine's Day?

We agree with you.
I don't mind some chocolates etc.
But NEVER dinner on that night- sub par food, sub par service and HIGH HIGH prices.

We love each other and respect each other every day of the year... not just because Hallmark came up with a great marketing scheme to sell cards!

And you want to know what I've noticed lately? Restaurants seem to be wising up to people doing exactly that and changing their menus for the week before and after VDay
Last year hubby and I went to dinner the week after V-day...early in the week.
The local Italian place we love STILL had their "special" (read pricey) menu that night. Basically higher prices and less selection. We were SO mad.

And my girlfriend said the same thing about another restaurant the week BEFORE V-day last year.

What a scheme!!

Re: What are your thoughts on Valentine's Day?

I won't lie... I'd be upset if I didn't get a card. It's a special time of year for me and DH because we started dating just before V-Day. We probably wouldn't stray from our normal routine though, just maybe a nicer dinner than usual. Just as long as we're together, that's all I really care about.

I like the sentiment - a special day to remember who you love but I think the commercialism, jacked up prices, etc sort of takes the romance out it.

i agree. just because we show each other how much we love, care for, and appreciate each other the other 364 days of the year doesn't mean we can't also take advantage of a day (commerical or not) specifically devoted to love!

we are keeping it low key this year to save $$ but i am still hoping for a card. DH can be quite the romantic!

Re: What are your thoughts on Valentine's Day?

I think it is just a commercialized holiday. I do nice things and tell DH how much I love him every chance I get, I dont need a designated day in the year to do this. I do however enjoy getting dressed up and going out to dinner with him on Vday. I just dont think he needs to spend $100 on flowers, or buy me gifts or go to a super fancy/expensive restaurant.

Re: What are your thoughts on Valentine's Day?

To me, i really don't care... But then again I have never had a boyfriend (past tense) nor does my husband ever make a huge fuss about it. although I would welcome one of those valentines day where I am pampered and showered with chocolates and things that are pink and to feel like I am the most important thing in the world. Re: What are your thoughts on Valentine's Day?

DH usually has to work on valenties day and that entire weekend because it is the weekend before all of his comp systems go live. This year it is the week after. I normally get omaha steaks during their 1/2 off sale and save them for valentine's dinner. I did the same thing this year. So I will make fillet minion, potatoes, veg, salad and a dessert to celebrate. I like getting valentine's day cards. I told DH not to get me flowers because they are so ove priced. He can get them for me the week after and they will be back down to $10 for a dozen roses which is fine for me. I love chocolates so any time we have that in the house is yummy.

I feel the same.
We're good to each other all the time but it feels nice to get wrapped up in the sillyness too.
