BTDT Reflux mommy's
DS has been on prevacid since he's 5 weeks old. He'll be 8 months next week. How do I know when he doesn't have reflux anymore? Do I just stop the medication for a few days and see what happens???

no, you have to wean off the meds. Talk to your Dr first to form a plan to stop. My DS is 13 mths and is still on. Be on them since 3 or 4 months. Good Luck

Usually they don't like you to wean until they're 6 months old. That is typically when their GI systems are fully developed.
Ds is 7 months old and in a week or two, we plan to wean him and see what happens.

Re: BTDT Reflux mommy's
To the OP, I wish I had advice but our reflux just started.. a dr we know recommended prevacid for our DD but we haven't asked our ped yet. How did it work for your DC?
But I wanted to ask, when did you ladies make the decision to try meds? DD has reflux, can barely lay down comfortably. I have tried everything and wonder if I have to use medication to handle this so hte poor child can sleep laying down finally.

Well my ds has silent reflux. We knew he had to go on meds because he would not sleep on his back or even in the bouncy seat for more than 2 hours at a time. Anytime you put him down, he cried. Plus he would have screaming fits and would actually cry in the middle of a feeding. It was almost like he was colicky... but he wasn't.

DS has silent reflux. He could not eat more than 1 or 2 oz's at a time, so medication was necessary. We tried Zantac and Pepcid but it did nothing. Prevacid worked WONDERS. You'd never know anything was wrong with him. I hated medicated him at 5 weeks, but he couldn't eat. So I guess it was the lesser of the 2 evils.
Hope your DD feels better soon

Re: BTDT Reflux mommy's
I would talk to your doctor. I remember reading that reflux can last up to like 15 months. For us, we decided to see how he was doing when he turned a year and wer were going to start milk. He was taking the Zantac twice a day. Then we went down to once a day for a week or two. Then we lowered the dosage for another week or so. Then-- he had cereal in his bottles--we reduced the amount of cereal and then got rid of it all together over 2-3 weeks. When he was still good after all that, we started the switchover to milk, 2 oz at a time. It was a very gradual change for us to make sure he was doing well.
ETA DS had silent reflux and had trouble drinking. He would take a few sips, scream and push the bottle away. Then he would scream for it back because he was hungry. This process would constantly repeat and it would take forever for him to have a bottle. It was painfulf or him to eat and he needed the Zantac. Two days later he was eating like a champ and doing great.
