Hot chocolate?
My RE told me in no uncertain terms NO caffeine, not even the one cup a day rule. Nada, zilp, zich.
So does that also exclude anything like hot chocolate? I'm sure there is a minimal amount of caffeine from the chocolate 
What's the verdict?

I also don't consume ANY caffeine......
It depends on where you get teh hot chocolate and the concentration of cocoa powder. A milk chocolate does not have very much/minimal caffeine as compared to a dark chocolate.
I do tend to stay away from eating solid chocolates because I can "feel" caffeine effects from it when I consume it.......

that sounds extreme to me, and i'd be interested to know what evidence your RE is basing this "rule" on...
but nonetheless, if you're not to have any caffeine whatsoever, i guess that means no hot chocolate

I don't know why no caffeine is extreme?? Caffeine is a stimulant and they have just recently started researching the effects of caffeine in pregnancy. Recent studies suggest that caffeine consumption in early pregnancy can lead to an increase chance of miscarriage...... Most books and article reccomend to stay away from both caffeine and alcohol when pregnant.
There are some physician who say a certain amount of caffeine is ok but that is based on very little research....
Everyone should do what they feel comfortable with under the reccomendations of their health care provider.........

I think starbucks has a while chocolate raspberry mocha drink... you can ask for it without the espresso..... that sounds delicious!

there is little conclusive evidence on this topic either way. if you search you will find studies that support an association between caffeine and all sorts of harmful outcomes in pregnancy. you will also find studies that show no association between caffeine and harmful outcomes. it's hard to do these studies in a way that is unbiased, so most of them are flawed.
of course most books and articles say to stay away from caffeine completely... it's by far the safest position to take for the author... but it's not because there is more evidence pointing that way.
as a physician but not an OB (but i have worked with quite a few), i haven't come across one that says absolutely NO caffeine. that's why i was wondering (to myself, and in my initial response) if there was some new evidence that put the OP's RE in the strictly no caffeine camp - that's all.
i totally agree that everyone should do what they feel comfortable with, under the recs of their provider.

Not yet - haven't felt the urge yet to brave the outside cold to find a starbucks

what about later in pregnancy - like toward the end of the second tri and third?
I have had cravings lately for hot chocolate and chocolate in general. Dr says it is fine.

But I'm sure you can go online and check the amount of caffiene in anything -
I'd probably stay away from starbucks or something like that .........what about the swiss miss stuff?

White hot cocoa is awesome. I don't think Starbucks has it though. I've had the powdered kind you can make at home.
As for drinking it during pg, my OB was as strict as your RE-- NO caffeine. Caffeine is suspected to increase the risk of miscarriage... that cup of coffee isn't worth it to me! I think after the 1st trimester though, something with minimal caffeine like hot cocoa or tea is ok though. I have hot cocoa once a week or so. I still steer clear of coffee and cola though.

Starbucks has a drink I forget what its called my friend told me about it and its yummy. I think its a steamer? Its basically just hot milk and vanilla syrup or whatever flavor syrup you want. no caffeine!!

I just ate 2 pieces of godiva chocolate today and a cupcake from magnolia with chocolate icing. I didn't even think of the caffeine issue...i have been so good with no caffeine for weeks. darn. but it was all SO GOOD!!!!!!!

I had no caffeine in the beginning. Starting at around 25 weeks, I have been craving Hot Chocolate. I have it once a day. Now I have to ask the doctor if this is okay. I new chocolate had caffeine but very little. Plus the doctor said you are aloud a little each day.

If your RE said NO caffeine then you should stay away from all chocolate too. I know caffeine has been known to increase risk of miscarriage. I personally stay away from caffeine but I do drink limited hot chocolate. If you really want it I would call your RE and ask if they include this or if they just want you to stay away from caffeinated beverages like coffee and tea.

I'm not in NY, so I can't give you any store recommendations, but...there is a brand of hot cocoa called Goodnight Hugs that's white chocolate. I know it has no caffeine because we just recently had a box in the house (all gone now ). See if you can find it, it's in a dark brown and purple box.
