Just a friendly vent

Ok, not sure about the other mommies-to-be that have gained over 20lbs through their pregnancy (I'm not giving my exact gain), but over the past week, this board has gone into crazy weight gain/loss mode and is def. making us who have gained a healthy amount of weight feel not so happy. I know I know everyone's body is different, blah blah. But if I see another 5 lb weight gain at 30 weeks, I think I may cut off my left thigh!!!!

That being said, its the holidays and I hope we are all enjoying ourselves and not stressing too much about weight!!! I know, I know, all the facts, stastics, etc.

But come, there is so much more exciting stuff to chat about. Lets see:

nursery decor
clothing
BF
etc

Sorry, had to vent.

Happy Holidays to all!!

Re: Just a friendly vent

Agreed re: the new 'obsession' - But I think it goes both ways as far as feeling crappy about yourself -

On the flip side, those of us who haven't gained very much yet can also feel like we're doing something 'wrong'

the whole "what's your secret?" thing kind of insinuates I'm eating 100 calories a day - KWIM? Like I'd deliberately starve myself and this baby to fit into my jeans? Chat Icon

Not saying anyone SAID that, but you KWIM ??

I thought it was just me noticing the obsession. I'm pregnant and I'm going to gain weight. Period.

Re: Just a friendly vent

I understand how you feel..... I am one of those with little weight gain, in fact I have a negative weight gain at 29 weeks. While you may feel bad about the weight that you have gained, I feel horrible I haven't gained any.

I feel the most backwardsa$$ pregnant woman. My rings are big on me, my maternity clothes are getting bigger, my boobs are getting smaller. Its unerving that while everyone is gaining weight I am not and PG women are suppose to gain weight.....

PG is so hard because your body is no longer yours and we have to learn to relinquish the reigns to another force and at the same time deal with our changing bodies and our new "look". Be proud of your changing body and wieght whether positive or negative because in the end it is all for the same wonderful cause, the creation of a new beautiful life!

Re: Just a friendly vent

I think there is always a surge in these kinds of threads as there are a bunch of new BFPs, or people hit other milestones in their pregnancies. It's cyclical.

People like to check in with others to see how they are doing, and those who are newly pregnant want to know what their in store for.

I will say that when people post their weight gains, etc., I think it's completely taken out of context as there are many things that affect weight gain during pregnancy such as pre-pregnant weight, morning sickness, drastic changes in diet, your body's general reaction to pregnancy, etc.

There is NO WAY you can compare yourself to someone when they just say at XX weeks, I have gained XX pounds. Bottom line, you need to pay attention to your doc, and your own scale and think about what makes the most sense for YOU.

I am loving this thread. Let's talk about other things than weight. We are all different, we all have different bodies, and they are all going to respond differently to pregnancy.

There's so much more to discuss...I know I have lots of questions!!Chat Icon

Nobody should feel bad about themselves over gaining pg weight! This is my 2nd pg, with the first I gained somewhere between 30-35 lbs, and now I'm 30 wks along and have gained at least 25 or so, not sure exactly. I was a size 4 before both babies, so 30 lbs really shows! Trust me, it comes off after the baby comes out! I would say all except maybe 5-7 lbs came off me within three weeks or so of having DS. A lot of it is fluid, and I did breastfeed which burns a lot of calories, but basically your body just returns to its normal ways and the weight just comes off.

Anyway, enjoy your pregnancy, enjoy your food, enjoy your weight... it's 9 months of your life, and everything goes back to normal! It's nothing worth feeling bad about!

I know what you mean, Kerry......I wasn't even going to put my weight gain on that thread, but then I realized that I don't care if anyone thinks I gained too much. My doctor hasn't said a word about it and that's all that matters.

Re: Just a friendly vent

I don't think there's any reason to be bothered by it, or to compare - every woman's body is different, and every pregnancy is different for that matter. I walked 2+ miles everyday of my last pregnancy, ate SO well, and yet I still gained over 50lbs! Chat Icon There's simply not much you can do to control it, and unfortunately much of it depends on sheer genetics.

And anyway, it's all moot, because most of the weight, no matter how much or how little you gained, comes off within the first year. I was a COW, and yet, within 10 weeks post-partum I was at my pre-pregnancy weight Chat Icon

Re: Just a friendly vent

I was thinking about this last night, and I think its totally a reflection on our society in general, pregnancy notwithstanding. Our society is just totally obsessed with weight and weight gain, and though we (meaning collectively) know that weight gain is normal and healthy during pregnancy, it still makes us wince to see the scale go up.
Personally, I haven't really paid too much attention to it. I know everything I have gained is in my belly and boobs, no other part of me has changed. I know that my eating habits are no different than they were prepregnancy. I know I am not overindulging just because I am pregnant.
I know that I am growing two babies inside me and they need nourishment to grow. I know that as they grow, they gain weight. I know there are lots of other things that happen along with the babies to make me gain weight. To know that my bodies can grow and sustain two lives is amazing to me, and THAT's what I think of, not the number that is on the scale.

I def don't think people are obsessed about it. I think others are just curious on what others have gained or not gained that are the same weeks as they are.

I am one that is 31 weeks and only gained 3lbs but who cares. I am not obsessed about it. I am actually worried that she doesn't have any room in there or she isn't getting enough nutrition or something.

I don't see the big deal with people sharing.

I think it's fine to share too...but comments such as "You haven't gained anything? How did you do it?" can make people feel bad. I know everyone's experience is different, but I actually got YELLED AT by my OB when at 22 weeks, I had only gained a pound. Now that I'm 38 weeks and up 21 lbs, she's going a little easier on me...except for this past week. I inexplicably lost 7 lbs in a week Chat Icon. I can't even do that when I'm NOT pregnant!!!

I think I got a little off-topic, but...I guess what I'm trying to say is, not gaining any weight during pregnancy is nothing to be proud of and can actually be really dangerous to the baby. I totally agree with Kerry that some of the posts get a little weight-obsessed, and it can sometimes make others feel bad about themselves.

Actually it is not dangerous to the baby if you do not gain that much weight. People that are overweight to begin with shouldn't gain that much weight it is more dangerous to do so.

And I am proud that I only gained 3 lbs. I am already overweight and have rods in my back and with DS had toxemia so little weight gain for me is very important.

Re: Just a friendly vent

Woman no matter pregnant or not pregnant weight gain is always a HOT topic and is discussed. I just cant worry about it right now.. im pregnant and thats it.. going to enjoy my freedom to eat what I want and deal with it later after baby is born. Im not going to make myself stressed out over something thats going to happen regardless of what i do.

It never occured to me that people felt badly. I am sorry that the answers were not just taken as fact. I think most of us (well me anyway) that post our responses are doing it from a place of trying to help or offer info for our other PG gals here to use when going to the Dr.

It's not a competition, and it's not anything that any of us can change. We all have our own PGs and the only one who should have ANYTHING to say about it are our Drs, KWIM?

Nah, I think we all know no one is pointing fingers - and deliberately trying to make each other feel bad -

it's just a matter of being hard on ourselves - If you gained more than someone else you're comparing yourself and worrying 'what did I do wrong' - If you gained significantly less than someone else you're comparing yourself and you're worrying 'what did I do wrong?'
