Did you take your husband's last name when you got married?

I didn't take DH's last name. Now that we are thinking of baby names for our Chat Icon I'm reconsidering changing my last name so we can all have the same last name.

Most of my friends actually didn't change their last names legally. Socially they will be Mrs. X but their license, social security, credit cards, etc all are under their maiden name.

Is it more of a hassle to change your last name if you have already been married for a while?

I took his name, yes. It meant a lot to me to do so....so i'm not sure how big a hassle it is to change once you've been married...

I changed my name. The paperwork is the same if you just got married or have been married for awhile. There won't be any extra work.

Re: Did you take your husband's last name when you got married?

I changed my name as it was important to both of us that I do so.

It shouldnt matter whether you are married 2 weeks or 10 years as far as changing your name. you will still need your marriage license.

I am so glad you asked this. I hyphenated and haven't admittedthis to DH but have been regretting it since getting pg/having DD.

I also wonder how would I go about fully changing it to his last name only and not being hyphenated anymore.

I would have to change so many things but am strongly considering it.

I didn't think it was a very big deal at the time we got married. I have a very common first name so I was thinking that no one would be able to recognize who I was (academically/professionally). Plus thinking about all the paperwork and redoing financials seemed like a huge hassle. Now I am more open to going through the legal hassle.

Re: Did you take your husband's last name when you got married?

When we got married, no. The first time I got pregnant almost 2 years later is when I decided to do it because I wanted us to all have the same last name. It wasn't difficult, but I did confuse a lot of people.

Re: Did you take your husband's last name when you got married?

I legally took his name (after a huge fight b/c I didn't want to) but I kept mine @ work - .......kind of.
@ work I'm Marisa M K .......I'm kind of worried that when I deliver they're going to have the baby listed as Baby M K, rather than just Baby K .......(We're under MY insurance, so everything has to have M K on it) I was thinking I should just totally change it @ work and get it over with ..........

But changing it after the fact is the same as immediately - Just bring your paperwork to SS and DMV, and once that is done, send the letters to everyone else ..........that's a PITA, but it's a one time thing -

i didn't take DH's last name... it meant a lot to me to keep my father's name, and professionally it was MUCH easier for me to keep my last name since it is on my diplomas. DS has DH's last name and so far it hasn't been a problem. more of an annoyance at times than anything else.

i don't think you should have a problem doing it now - i believe the paperwork is the same no matter when you do it.

Re: Did you take your husband's last name when you got married?

I've been married almost a year and just recently legally changed my name. The only hassle I had was at the social security place and that is only because they are cracking down so make sure you have lots of forms of ID with you Chat Icon

I just had my baby, I am hyphenated so baby had my hyphen name. But then you fill out papers to put what name baby will have, for SS and of course we just put DHs last name. Baby having your name in the hospital is not an issue.

I know I can change it on the paperwork - But I'm afraid his hospital bracelet and his name in the nursery etc. will say Baby M K .........DH will be REALLY upset if that's the case. I don't know why it's such a big deal to him, but I don't want to upset him w/ something so stupid - KWIM?

My son is just Noah Hisname.I have been married for almost 10 years and I have a double barrelled last name, I am Mrs Myname-Hisname. My son is just Noah Hisname. When it comes to my son, I just call myself Mrs Hisname, its easier.

I hear ya. I have a friend who is hyphenatged like myself and I never forget she told me she LOVED seeing her name on the bracelet, and that hers was fully on there but his was cut off...so I can understand what you are saying. Yes, it will show your name for sure.

But if the hospital and drs already have your chart as your maiden name, I would be very careful about changing all that now...

Yeah, this is what I'm afraid of - My maiden name is very long and DH's often gets cut off (his is only 4 letters though) .......I haven't preregistered @ the hospital, but on all of my sonos it's M K ..........CRAP .......I'm going to have to warn him ahead of time I guess

Re: Did you take your husband's last name when you got married?

I legally hyphenated-- keeping my maiden name professionally, and his name socially... although I pretty much use the names interchangeably. I haven't changed my name everywhere either, but it hasn't posed a problem since either way, my legal last name has both names.

i never formally changed my last name..on my lisense or at social security and dont really plan on it..we are socially known as mr and mrs hisname..so it doesnt bother him at all...my insurance is under his job, and somehow is under mrs jaime hisname..so im assuming my baby will be baby hisname as well....no??
