Anyone have trouble drinking the liquid for the glucose test? I still have m/s.

I'm still suffering from m/s halfway through my second trimester. I was feeling better for a week or two but it is back. Chat Icon

The next test I have to take is the glucose test. I usually drink a maximum 4 ounces of liquid at a time. I really can't drink much more. I'm afraid I am going to start gagging at the test.

You can take your time drinking it- I would do a little at a time as long as you finish it in fifteen minutes or so. Then you have to wait the hour until you test.

I had a hard time this past time with it. I should have drank it a little slower.

I had hyperemsis and didn't really have trouble with the drink. It does taste like flat soda. I'd go first thing in hte morning too.

I actually failed my 1hr (I was so mad, how could I have GD when I didn't EAT!) but passed my 3hr and I started to feel a bit yucky during the 3 hr, but I didn't puke. And everything made me pukeChat Icon

Yes, my doctor wanted me to take it a month or so ago and I ended up running to the bathroom and up it came. I have to try again in a few weeks, not looking forward to it.Chat Icon

Mine was like super sweet fruit punch. I had no issues getting it down.

Really? Both my 1 hour and 3 hour I had strict instructions I couldn't take more than 5 minutes to finish the drink!

To the OP: While I don't have any more nausea, I did have a hard time with the drinks because I'm not used to drinking sweet things. I only ever drink water or unsweetened iced tea. So, for me it was difficult.

you need to finish that drink in 5 minutes, just so you know in advance lol..and i was one of the unfortunate ones who not only puked the drink up once in the lab, but twice..my dr ended up telling me since i couldnt prove i didnt have GD, that i had to monitor and test my blood 4 times a day till he was convinced..
im actually completely opposite, and totally hypoglycemic...

i had a really hard time with it, but i think its because im post operative gastric bypass, and you physically cannot tolerate a certain amount of sugar or you get very sick..
everyone else i knew who took it was ok..im sure youll be ok, just try and psych yourself into it!

They made me drink it in 5 mins too. I failed the one but passed the 3 with really good numbers so who knows. Honestly I was really nauseas when I took the test and it wasn't bad there are several different flavors - if you can get it cold it helps. Honestly it isn't as bad as people say it is - I hate very sweet things and it was just like soda without the carbonation. I had both the orange and the cola flavored ones. I hear the lime or lemon isn't so good -they told me NOT to try that one when they gave me my choices.

Re: Anyone have trouble drinking the liquid for the glucose test? I still have m/s.

I would ask and see if they will do a post parandial glucose test on you..

this is how the American Diabetes Association tests for diabetes and the method my midwives use for testing for GD. We don't do the horrid sugar drink because its not a realistic interpretation of someones diet. No one eats pure sugar for a meal.

A post parandial blood work tests your blood sugar 2 hours after you have eaten a meal with 100 grams of carbs and see's your bodys reaction to that.

I honestly don't know why OBs make PG women drink that crap when a doctor would NEVER do that to test someone who is diabetic.

It can't hurt to ask......

I've also heard of women eating a certain amount of jelly beans and gettign the sugar from that instead of drinking the drink.

All you really need to do is consume a certain amount of simple sugar/carbs for the test to work. The method of consumption does not make a difference.

ya know something...i had this kind of test done at my first OB when i told her i couldnt handle the drink because i threw it up in the office...when they did this test on me, i ate french toast with syrup and oranje juice for breakfast..i was tested two hours later, and was VERY LOW..she diagnosed me as hypoglycemic...
when i changed doctors, and told him that i had this done..and that i didnt need to do the glucose tolerance, he laughed at me and said it was ridiculous and that for years this test has been proven because its measured exactly to be what you need to see if you have GD or not..i was so ******..i happen to go into him the morning of my sons birthday, after eating 2 cupcakes, and at least 3 spoonfuls of pure icing from the container...(whatever im pregnant lol) he made me take the one hour test WITHOUT FASTING after all of that sugar, i threw up the drink AGAIN..they took my blood and it was high...uh hello, i just ate 2 cupcakes and a can of icing of course its high, and to be honest it was only 137 so it wasnt TOO HIGH...
he then sent me for the 3 hour, i was sooo aggravated, because i KNEW the test you spoke of already diagnosed me...he didnt agree with it..
i threw up the drink AGAIN.,for the 3 hour, was unable to be tested, and was "temporarily diagnosed" GD until i could prove i wasnt..i got the monitor, and had LOW BLOOD SUGAR every single testing 4 times a day for 2 weeks...even after pumpkin pie for lunch lol

these drs have no clue what theyre doing, i wish looking back i wouldve went to a midwife!

Yeah that is what I am dong for mine. I eat french toast with syrup and OJ and some protein like scrambled eggs and bacon........

If you do research on the sugar drink its really a poor method and not a good indicator AT ALL of GD. A lot of women are diagnosed with GD and they don't have it. Its just their body can't process 50 grams of pure glucose so quickly.

My midwife said that unless you are eating two candy bars as a meal then teh test is not goign to be accurate reading of how your body handles the sugar....

I wasn't suffering from m/s at the time, but I thought the drink was pretty awful. I don't like most juices, hate soda and usually only drink water. I definitely made a face the entire time I drank it. Chat Icon I had to take the 1 hour and 3 hour test. Good luck. Chat Icon

If you ahve a chioce btwn lemon/lime or orange, go orange, or ask if they have it. I took 1 and 3 hr and found the organge to be a lot more tolerable.

Also, try to remember to bring a straw...that might help you get it down.

Good Luck!

If you got your MS back again I would ask your Dr what you should do, I know there was no way I could drink that stuff If I had MS, its VERY sweet, and I even felt a little sick after I drank it with no MS. Maybe you can take it when you feel better again.
