Christening Favor???????????????

I had a silly question....
the baby isnt born yet he is due in April....

But my dear mom has already started planning the christening.....

I told her that I dont want to give a favor...

I would rather give each guest a card stating something like this....

Dear Mr. and Mrs. so and so....

A donation has been made in your name to the March of Dimes.... or another charity....

I know that I would like to have a candy buffet so people can load up on some sweets....

My mom thinks people will laugh.....

I wanted to do this because I think as nice a favor as you give most will and do get tossed....

If I donate $5 for every person that is a good sized donation....

How would you feel and be honest...

If you guys think it is cheesy I will reconsider...

Mama is old fashioned so I want to see what you ladies think?

Re: Christening Favor???????????????

what about doing something like a donation favor with a chocolate gift box instead of a candy buffet. Would that be a happy compromise?

i think a candy bar and the donation card are enough!

i've been to christenings before that did NOT have favors at all...it's not something that's 'expected'...at least in my circle of friends...

eta: in thinking about it - i've NEVER been to a christening and gotten a favor....(i've been to maybe 6)

Re: Christening Favor???????????????

See favors are a given by my family for all occassions. We may just do chocolates for baby dodge's christening.

Ya see - i get that... I'm all about practicality...give me something i can DO something with, eat, etc...

I feel so badly when i go to events and come home with a 'trinket'...i keep them for a year, maybe more and then, they eventually get tossed...and whomever spent so much money for nothing...

Re: Christening Favor???????????????

I personally think favors are a waste of money unless it's something edible.

And I don't care what my Mom and the rest of the 'older' family 'expects' anymore - I do what I want.
I think your favor is a wonderful idea. - If there MUST be a favor, skip the candy buffet and do a small box of Godiva or something ........

Re: Christening Favor???????????????

i work in a favor store and a lot of times when people are going to give a donation they get a small frame that would hold a 2 x 3 picture and put and insert inside that says about the donation this way they have a small favor also

while cupcakes are nice, they will be more expensive than chocolates.

Definitely, unless you make them yourself, but then you still have to purchase the boxes...

Re: Christening Favor???????????????

omg!! you must be italian! i am half italian and my mom is always so concerned about giving the proper favor...

anyhow, i think your idea is a fantastic one! i would def. do it. first of all, i've come to hate favors. people always try so hard to come up with a good favor that will actually be used, but 8times out of 10, they're useless...

since my engagement party, i've been doing only edible favors. i've done mini wine bottle favors, a box of 4 truffles as a favor... and for the Christening, i think i am going to do biscotti in a clear cello bag.
i figured i would give a choco. and a vanilla biscotti to each person.. and i'll have it presented nicely.
i dont plan on spending more than $3 pp.

honestly, this is your baby, your christening. do what you want to do!!

Re: Christening Favor???????????????

I love your idea and think your donation would go to much better use than for favors that people might not keep.

We didn't do favors for DS's Christening, but we are not a family that is big on favors anyway.

This is exactly what we did as the favor for my shower. My MIL printed out (on paper that matched my invites) something along the lines of..."In loving memory of Whitney's mom, Patricia, a donation has been made in lieu of favors to St. Judes Hospital..."
Then she rolled it up like a scroll with a little plastic rattle on an elastic band to hold it together and put it at everyone's place setting.

I thought it was very practical and meaningful. If anyone thought it was inappropriate or disapproved, I haven't heard about it.

I think if you want to do that, it's a wonderful idea.

Re: Christening Favor???????????????

My baby shower favor was also in the form of a donation. The money went to the Hospice center that took care of my aunt/godmother the year before. It was a great idea and I was so touched with the amount of emails I recieved afterwards from people commenting on how thoughtful it was.

Re: Christening Favor???????????????

I LOVE the donation favor, I did that (to St Jude's also) for our wedding. I really detest all the useless trinkets I've collected over the years, I've gotten rid of all of them at this point.

There are great cookie favors out there too, which might be cheaper than cupcakes? You can even get ones with pictures of the baby, then wrap them and attach the donation card.

Re: Christening Favor???????????????

My SIL gave a cute card with an angel made of recycled paper that contained flower seeds. It was very cute. IDK if she ordered them online or DIY.

Re: Christening Favor???????????????

what about a box or a bag (printed with babys christening info) given out with the card stating your donation.

this way the box or bag can be used to take some candy home.

Re: Christening Favor???????????????

being i just looked at all of these options lol....

a decorative cupcake favor in a gift wrapped box will run you about $5.95 per piece..

a decorative cookie in a pretty cellophane wrapping with bows are about $3.95 pp

for my baby shower, my mother got black and pink cookies (instead of black and whites, i LOVE those) and they decorated them with edible glitter and theyll say "Sugar and Spice and everything nice..."

For my DD's Christening, im not yet sure what we'll do, but if it isnt edible, it will DEFINATELY be a donation of some sort...i feel like anything else is pointless..

We did chocolates. I think if you want to do a donation then you should do it. And I had a candy buffet for DS birthday & it was a huge hit.Chat Icon

Re: Christening Favor???????????????

Its funny,
with my wedding; i wanted something useful; edible and i was anti-donations

however, when it comes to christenings and the like - I have gotten so many little knick-knacks that i think a donation to MOD would be SO nice!!

Re: Christening Favor???????????????

I don't think a favor is necessary at all for a christening. I do like the donation idea though if you are going to do a favor, I think that is a very good way to go. We did something similar for our wedding.
