Another NYPD academy question! Sorry!
So, DH got a letter today asking consent to start the invesigation process. Is this normall the first step, and then he'll get a packet, etc?

that is the beginning---he is in the process....and unless they find out that he's a secret crack smoking fiend -- it means he is pretty likely to get into a class.

Don't under estimate the NYPD. 
I was going through the process and during one of the stages (I can't recall if it was the medical exam or written psychological), they brought everybody in and took something like 12 out in cuffs (I'm exaggerating...they escorted them out and I'm sure they followed up in the warrants.) Apparently there were warrants out for them and they neglected (or forgot) to tell NYPD. Duh. Needless to say, they didn't make it to the next stage.

I think they are gonig to be VERY strict now with their screening process b/c of the pay raise. But unless your DH is a felon with a warrant or smokes crack like another poster said, I think he'll be ok

 Doesn't surprise me. They were hiring winners there for awhile. They are actually people on the NYPD who were hired with a criminal record

He's going to start getting notices to appear for his psychological, physical, etc. testings.
By the way, I hate to be the bearer of bad news but the January 2009 class has been cancelled.
