Decrease in progesterone Levels...

I'm approximately 6 weeks, 5 days PG. I posted a couple of days ago about going for an early u/s. The docs were not able to see the heartbeat as of yet. I was able to make a followup appointment for 11/11. It was originally scheduled 2 weeks from now and there was no way I could wait that long.

Anyway, along with the u/s they took more blood - HcG levels and Progesterone. I had started spotting 2 weeks back so I had bloodwork taken early. HcG levels were more than doubling and Progesterone levels were at 20, which is supposedly good (I was 4 weeks at the time).

Well, I got my other bloodwork results back today and my HcG levels were 56,991 but my Progesterone levels dropped to 15. My OB is starting me on Progesterone suppositiories.

Needless to say, I am so scared right now. I am trying not to be negative but this in conjunction with the u/s on Monday and spotting is just making things so rough for me.

I tried to look up some information online on this topic. Much of it is negative so I've stopped reading for now. I'm 35 (going on 36) and although I was against an amnio initially, I may consdier it now if all is well.

Has anyone had low or decreased Progesterone levels while PG?

By the way, sorry I have not "formally" introduced myself on here. I just want to make sure everything is okay Chat Icon . I did have a chemical PG about 2 months back so I am just praying all goes well with this pregnancy.

your progesterone level is one that changes every day - many times a day.

i was with an RE - and every single time i had my numbers checked, my Progesterone level was different!!!! I asked once and the nurse told me that as long as it stayed above a certain number, we were fine...

It's a GOOD thing that your doctor is being proactive with the suppositiories!!!

Re: Decrease in progesterone Levels...

There have been quite a few women on here that have been put on progesterone in early pregnancy to keep their levels up.

The good news is they caught that your levels are a bit on the lwoer side BEFORE you started showing major prpblems, so with starting the progesterone you shouldn't have any problems.

From what I hear you are going to want to invest in a nice box of panty liners because you will have some LOVELY discharge Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon

ETA: researching stuff like this on the internet is NEVER a good thing.... and I'm not sure why a lower progesterone level would have any impact on whether or not you would get an amnio???

Re: Decrease in progesterone Levels...

I was also with an RE and mine jumped around a bit - but did stay above a certain # (sorry I can't remember what it was)

I was on suppositories 4X a day and a daily injection for about 11 weeks.

Good luck to you!!

I had very low progesterone levels throughout my whole 1st trimester even with progesterone supplements and everything was fine. My number was always around 12.

<-------------See........perfectly fine!! Chat Icon

They put me on vaginal suppositories at about 5 1/2 - 6 weeks and I stayed on them until week 12 when the placenta took over. Once the placenta takes over you don't need to worry anymore about progesterone levels because the placenta is able to produce as much of the hormone that is needed to sustain the pregnancy.

To answer your question, when I spoke with one of my OB's today, we were discussing potential complications due to my age, and she brought up how more things can go wrong at 35 plus, and that this is why they have amnios, etc. In other words, lower levels of Progesterone could mean (hopefully) nothing, or they could indicate that something is wrong. So she encouraged me to get the amnio. I guess I'll cross that bridge when I come to it.

Re: Decrease in progesterone Levels...

my dr tol me that progesterone levels are fine as long as their above 5. as standard practice, however, they normally give suppositories if you drop below a 10 (mainly because progesterone is produced in waves and they can't be sure if the number they're getting is showing the highest levels you normally have or the lowest).

my progesterone was 11.6, 10.8, and 14.1 the few times i had bloodwork done in the first few months and everything's fine. they reassured me that those numbers were all good.

sounds to me like your dr is just being overly cautious.

Re: Decrease in progesterone Levels...

I had mine drop from 24 to 15. I went on suppositories also. I am now 10 weeks and today is my last day to be on them. 15 is still well within the normal range. They are just being cautious.

P.S. I know I sound calm now.. but, I was also freaking out when I found out I had to be on them.

My progesterone was low and I was put on vaginal suppositories and injectibles.

I am 38 and I chose not to have an amnio. It took us so long to get PG that even the slightest risk of miscarriage wasn't worth it to us.

Im over 35 too and chose not to have the amnio because like Juju it took me so long to get pregnant I wasn't going to take any chances.

Before the amnio, there are other tests you can do, to determine your risks. Ask your OB about them
