Food Help- NO COLD CUTS

I went to the Doctor yesterday and the NP there told me no cold cuts (deli meats) unless they are cooked. So what about cheeses you get at the deli? Like swiss, american. I am confused bc dont they cut those on the slicer as wellChat Icon

I didn't even think of this! Don't they cut cheese on a different slicer most times?

Re: Food Help- NO COLD CUTS

Cheeses are cut on a different slicer than meats (or they should be anyway). Anything made with Pasteurized milk is considered OK. I would go to a reputable place with a high over-turn of product if you are concerned. Chat Icon

Re: Food Help- NO COLD CUTS

They tell you not to eat deli meats and I would think it includes cheese due to the fact that you dont know how long it has been out of the case and if it is at the right temp.

But to be alarmed... With both DS and this pg I have been eating sandwiches from the deli and my son is perfectly healthy and no complications so far with this pg. If you want to have a sandwich go right ahead... you will find that a bunch of us here eat them on a daily basis....

Re: Food Help- NO COLD CUTS

the reason they tell you no cold cuts is because there is a risk that they may carry listeria, which is a bacteria that is known to cause miscarriages.

that being said, the chance of any deli meats being infected with listeria are very small - especially if you go to a reputable deli that has a high turnover (this is what i was told - i am NOT a doctor or a scientist).

i do know that if you want to have deli meats anyway, they are safe to eat if you heat them in the microwave until they are steaming.

and as for deli cheeses, as the PPs said they are all safe as long as they are pasteurized - and american, swiss, provolone are all pasteurized.

ITA.... my OB told me that I could have the Deli Selects by Pepperidge Farm - i think....

they are in the deli section in the red tupperware bowls.... they are cut by factory, so the chance of listeria contamination is very minimal.

I worked in a Deli throughout High School - NOT EVERY DELI cuts meat & cheese on a separate slicer. Be careful & CHECK!

Re: Food Help- NO COLD CUTS

The bottom line is that you have to feel comfortable with what you are eating. If it is going to stress you (and some of us do stress over it, so you would not be alone) then avoid them. If you are OK with it, then do what you feel is right.

Oh and daveandjess's list is one of the best I've found.Chat Icon
