how felixible should i be on the name??

ok so, when i got pregnant, COMPLETELY unexpectedly (actually we thought we couldnt have kids..but thats a whole other story...) we were SOOO EXCITED!!! thennnn my fiancee reminded me that i promised that him if we ever had a boy, we could name him after his dad...this was 5 YEARS AGO!!! who knew we'd ever make it to this point!?!?! and i was sooooo against it for 2 reasons..i'm not too fond of the name (demitrius) and 2 HE CAN BARELY EVEN STAND HIS FATHER!!!!! he only wanted to name him this becuase its customary in his culture to name the boy after the grandfather. anyway, we fought about it and then dropped it and i didnt want to bring up the name thing until we found out what we were having..sooooo low and behold, we found out we are having a boy!! Chat Icon DAMMIT! lol nooo jk im very excited but i was nervous to get back on the "lets pick a name" wagon...until he sooooooo wonderfully brought it up and said..."hey we really need to choose a name"...meaning he was over the wholeeeee Demetirus thing and we were free to choose a name we BOTH liked (sorry im getting to the point!!) soo we decided...well HE decided that his middle name will be james...(oh and keep in mind hes greek and our last name in 17 letters!! thats 17!!!!! we need to keep his other names short!) james is the american version of Demitrius and that is what his dad goes by sooo i sad ok! sounds great! but nowwww he's hooked on the name Dylan..and hes not budging!! i like the name, i dont love it...and im not sure how much i should fight this! i dont understand why he thinks he gets to chose not only our sons middle name but his first name too! and i dont know if i should give into it because like i said i do not hate it and maybe i should just be thankful that it doesnt have to be Demetrius! anywayyyy please let me know if any of you have gone though this kind of nonscene!! i'd like to know how to handle it!!!! thanks sooooooooooooo much for your time!!!! Well, i think you should both love the name if possible, and if that's just not possible, you should both at least like it a whole lot. Have you thrown out other boy names that you love? If so, does he also love/really like any of them?

We were able to pick our girl's name easily. But had it been a boy, we were having a rough time. He had picked a boys name that he was set on years ago...before we ever met. The first and middle each had meaning to him. The middle name I was fine with bc it was after his grandfather, and was just a middle name, but the first, I was not crazy about. It wasn't bad, but to me it was boring. But, like you, I had told him ok and then started really regretting it. A few days before we found out the sex, I told him I had doubts. He was actually very open and said ok, well what else do you like? So, I made a long list of boy names that I liked in varying degrees, and said I would be fine on any one of them. He hated most of them, but there were a few that were in the running. Then we found out it was a girl, so never had to actually decide (though I think we have our boy name should we ever have a boy.)

Tell him this isn't a dictatorship -
If you don't like the name Dylan and you don't want to give in ........then don't - You'll have to keep looking until you find a name you can both live with -

You BOTH have to love the name of your child. This is not a short term thing. You have to love how you will call your DC for the rest of both your lives.

You have to both love it. That's the rule in our house for names. My DH loved the name Derek- hmmmm.. perhaps since he is rabid Yankee fan.... Me, Met fan... not so muchChat Icon I let him talk the name to death and now we have a name picked that we both like.Chat Icon

You have to both like the name. You need to keep picking out names until you both agree on one.

you both haved to love the name, you'll both be saying the name out loud alot over the next years....

Why dont you use Demitrius for the middle name(as it only comes out in legal documents) and plan for a first name you'll both loveChat Icon

Well, since you are the one carrying this child for 9 months, I think you should get a vote. I wouldn't settle for a name I though was 'okay'. Now, maybe it will grow on you, but if it doesn't by your due date, I would have a back up name that you both agree on.
