Question - what happens to a leased car if there is a death???
My mom (has cancer) is renewing her lease and is stressing out about this. She does not want to ask the dealer because she is afraid they will deny her a lease. THANKS!!!

Re: Question - what happens to a leased car if there is a death???
I don't think she should say a word about anything.
first and foremost, I'm so sorry that this is what it's come down to for your mom. I hope I'm wrong and she is still fighting.
A lease is like any contract. There should be something in the lease agreement about what happens to the debt upon death.
Yikes, I don't even want to say that.
Can your mom get a copy of the lease contract to review?

Re: Question - what happens to a leased car if there is a death???
if she leaves an estate, the estate will need to pay for it.
if not, or many family members take this option, return it to the dealership. if the dealership won;t take it, call car make corporate itself and tell them where it is parked. All the dealership or actual company would want is death certificate.
Don't let her put anyone else on the lease. If that happens, the cosigner will be responsible
FAMILY is not responsible

My father passed away in December and we were able to turn the car in even though there was an estate. It should say in the what happens in the contract before you sign it.

I'm sorry that she (and you) even have to think about this.

Thanks. She is doing pretty well, but she stresses out about everything. That is just the type of person she is. I told her who cares, if I have to pay for it I will, whatever, but she won't stop talking about it! I think Dh or I will go with her to read the agreement.

Re: Question - what happens to a leased car if there is a death???
My DH is not home now, but I will ask him the specifics when he gets in. We had a friend of the family recently pass away and I know her parents brought the car back in to the dealership. I am not sure of what the actual "transaction" was though, so I will ask.

I think you can turn the car in (with the death cert) ... I believe DH did this when his mom passed away with a relatively new lease.

julz, i can assure you as long as you are not on the lease, NO FAMILY is responsible.

Re: Question - what happens to a leased car if there is a death???
we returned my Moms car no problem after she passed away
HOWEVER- if that day ever comes- do NOT make any payments on it- just bring it back with a copy of the death certificate
they told my dad if he made a payment- that would have been him agreeing to continue the lease
it sucks that this is even a thought for her-
ETA- the lease was less then 1 year old
