Re: Vaginal birth poll

I'm having an elective c-section, so this doesn't really apply to me, BUT...if I were having a vaginal delivery, my feeling is this: This is 2008, and I don't feel it's necessary to prove anything to anyone. If there's something that can keep the pain away, I'll take it.

Could I do it naturally? Most definitely I could. But I have the option NOT to, and I think that's a beautiful thing. Chat Icon

I said only if necessary. I am scared of an epi and possible complications (especially because my spine is fused in the area due to scoliosis), and do not want to feel like I can't move my legs. I'm going to try and go natural and only get an epi of it's totally unbearable and my doc suggests it or I need a c-section.

OMG this is my concern to because I have scoliosis as well and it has a major hold on me

They should still be able to give you an epi, it's just trickier. So, I'd rather avoid it all together. But, we will see what happens!

I did not have one with my son...but I feel like I used to be more tolerant with pain.

I will see.

I tend to hate that numb feeling. I'd rather feel the pain. First time I ever had novacaine (last year), I nearly fainted...got all dizzy, pasty, etc. It was horrible.

although that is true, my baby might not have made it if it wasn't for the medical interventions i got. DS's cord was too short and he couldn't make it down the birthing canal. i pushed for 5 hours Chat Icon Chat Icon they had to use the vacuum to get him out because he couldn't come out on his own.

so if i lived a hundred years ago, either he and/or i could possibly have died.

luckily i'm alive NOW and had the options of the epi and vacuum available. and i birthed a happy, healthy baby boy and i was up and walking and showering 2.5 hours after birth.

the epi was a godsend. i was SCREAMING at the top of my lungs from the pain...i've never felt anything like it.

i couldn't walk at all with the pain. it was so intense that all i could do was curl up in a ball and cry. so don't assume that you'll be able to walk the halls. actually, at my hospital , you're NOT ALLOWED out of your room. you can walk in your room, but not the halls.

after the epi i was laughing and talking to everyone. it made pushing MUCH easier. if DS hadn't had a short cord, he would have been out within minutes.

if i DIDN'T have the epi, i wouldn't have been able to push because of the pain. i could only push after the pain went away.

oh, and ladies, you will not necessarily not be able to feel your legs. i felt mine just fine and was able to move them on their own. i couldn't put weight on them, but 2.5 hours after birth i was walking all over the place. i wasn't numb for hours the way people imagine.

just never say never.....don't limit your options. if i did, my birthing experience wouldn't have been as great as it was.

Re: Vaginal birth poll

If I am able to deliver vaginally, then I will try not to have an epi. I have a pretty high pain threshold and will go as long as I can without one. However, once and if I ask for one, then I want it and will have no regrets about it.

I am glad that YOU had birth experience that YOU wanted and that you were able to have a safe delivery. This being said, I don't think you read my whole post and MY personal philosphy on birth. I am not limiting my options, I have the option to labor and deliver at home safely in a loving, caring support enviroment with EXTREMELY well trained nurse practitioner midwives or in a hospital setting with those same midwives. I am preparing my self very well for somethign that has been done hndereds of years and is still done today in countries with BETTER infant and mortality rates than our own.

I understand that my views are not that of others and I don't impose my views on them but share how I feel. I also dont point out to wome who say "Give me teh drugs, I don't want to feel anythign" that maybe they shoudl give their bodies a chance to do what it is prepared to do.

I'm sorry but I find it a bit harsh for you to tell me I'm limiting myself when I was just expressing what I am doing to try and have a natural delivery and offering the OP some suggested reading to help her make HER decision.

Totally natural is the plan. I did it with DD and hope to do it again. I use midwives and will have a doula as well.

Re: Vaginal birth poll

my pg#2 is totally different from my pg with DS, so i voted "i'll see when i get there". i intended to see how much pain i could withstand when i was laboring with DS. turned out i was only "fingertip dilated" when i was very uncomfortable with the contractions. after the pitocin was turned on, i could not imagine delivering without the epidural.

whether or not you have the epidural, doesn't make you a better "mommy." you should listen to your body and know what you can tolerate.

i can say i had a pleasurable birthing experience because i was pain-free and focused. i had had no lamaze classes b/c i went into premature labor and was on bedrest for the last 8 weeks of my pg. i had no idea what the hell i was doing, but it turned out wonderfully.

i know of someone who tried to go natural b/c her hubby wanted her to, and according to her she was "crawling up the bed" and taking the siderails apart, crying hysterically during her labor. it was not pleasant at all for her. she waited until she was almost dead with unbearable pain.

if you choose to get the epidural, i would suggest not to wait until the pain is totally intolerable. it may be too late. anyways, sorry so long and good luck with your decision! i really admire those who can go with needing an epi for the pain... i can barely tolerate my menstrual cramps every month LOL

What I don't get is why do people feel they are proving something if they go natural? And who are they proving it to? Who the heck cares. I went natural with all my kids and I never did it b/c I felt I was proving to anyone that I can do it. Big deal, I went natural. Who's gonan remember that except me. I did it for me; and for myself only.

Wether I had demeral, epidurl, or a c-section.....I could care less what people thought. It's my baby and my body and whatever needs/needed to happen than so be it. However, out of all my options I chose natural. I also walked in that hospital with an open mind to anything but it worked out that I was able to do it with out drugs.

When my SIL has a baby do you think she'll try to go natural to prove to me that she can do it too? Heck no. She can probably care less about what I did.
She is going to do what works for her. She doesn't have to prove anything.

Going natural is a just another option. That's all it is. It's not something that goes down in history.

AND You are right...if you wanted to give birth naturally with no drugs you most definitetly could. And I think it's a wonderful thing that you have the OPTION not to. Thank goodness for options and for choices.

i wasn't saying anything to you about you personally limiting your options. you do what you want to do. it was a general statement.

i only quoted you because of the "women have been doing this forever" statement. although that is true, either my baby or i might not have made it if it weren't for current medicine, epi included. women have also been DYING for centuries during childbirth.

my body was well prepared, as you say, for childbirth but things DIDN'T happen naturally. it wasn't possible due to my son's cord. so although my body knew what to do, it couldn't do it. 5 hours of pushing is unbelievable...i hope you don't have to go through that. i barely made it through, and that is with the epi.

For me, I think it an irrational prove it to myself thing. I am kind of a stubborn pain in the butt who does not like to admit being hurt, tired or sick - this is my own issue to deal with, but I think it plays a big part in why i am struggling so much with what I will do once I get in the delivery room. All of my sisters had an epi, it's not like I am worried what they think. My DH has never made a comment one way or the other about what I do, it's my body, I will be the one dealing with the pain.

For some reason in my head I feel like things will go faster and smoother without an epi, I know it can slow down labor, I am really afraid of that happening. My sister had to be induced because the epi stopped labor, she ended up having a very difficult delivery and almost needed and Emergency C.

Thanks everyone for the responces, it is very helpful to hear what others are thinking!

The thing is the point of the post was how are you planning on delivering....I understand you had a medical emergency and not a normal presentation for delivery and therefore you were not under normal circumstances...................

Of course women died years ago during childbirth because we did not have the medical technology to aid women that were not having a normal delivery as you did.

What I am saying is that in a normal delivery there isn't need for medical intervention and a baby can be delivere healthy safe and sound in todays world...as evident by the countries which I mentioned that have LOWER infant and maternal morbidity and mortality rates than the US............

I guess I'm just annoyed that I posted what I plan on doing and my reasoning for it and you pointed out the medical reason why you needed and epidural and medical intervention and how we need to not limit our options....You had a medical emergency.....you obviously needed intervention. If I need medical intervention then by all means I will get it...........but this was not the topic of the post.........................

Maybe i'm just hormonal today but I'm tired of having to defend my reasons for doing what I'm doing after hundereds of hours of research, first hand knowledgeor labor and delivery (I have delivered 5 babies myself)..............countless interviews of healthcare practitioners and women having gone natural and their outcomes to women who may or may not have done as much research as me and are going by what their physician tells them.

I don't point fingers to others and make them feel bad about their decisions don't try and make me feel like I am making unsafe or bad decisions because your posts imply this by stating if you were at home having a himebirth you may not be around which is crap because you would have had 3 competent midwives taking care of you with the option of a medical transfer................. My midwife practice has NEVER lost a mother or a baby in their 20 years of practice..............

Re: Vaginal birth poll

Regardless of a big baby or not- labor hurts. The pushing part isn't the worst of it- it's the actual labor to get to it.

I had an epi with #1 and plan to get one for #2. The contractions I DID breathe through were exhausting enough- with the epi I was well rested after a nap to be ready to push....

A drug free birth has NOTHINGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGG to do with being a hero. NOTHINGGGGGGGG!!!

It's a personal choice just like excepting drugs is a choice. You can do it this way or you can do it that way. It's what "you" want. You want drugs and I wanted to go natural. No one is a hero. We both did the same thing different ways with the same outcome.

ETA: Some women don't have a choice and must be given an emergency c/s.

Also to browneyed girl, you are one trooper that you pushed for 5 hours. Hopefully next time around you won't have the same issue with the cord.Chat Icon
