Not exactly a question I was ready for
"What will happen to us if you & Daddy die?"
This is coming from the kid asked me this weekend if there was any chance he was adopted by us or there was a mistake in the hospital where he was switched with another baby.
He loves us but I think he's hoping for superhero parents. He told me when he meets his mom, he is going to love her more than anyone on the planet. I asked "More than me?" He said "Mom, she is my REAL mom. I would love her more than you." Later on, I clarified that the real mom is the one that raises you, that snuggles you, & is willing to wipe your tush. The other mom is a biological mom but the mom part comes from putting in the hours. He said hopefully "So..um..my real mom?" "Not a chance. Sorry. You're stuck with us."
Anyway, so last night he comes up with this question - right in front of his Wednesday Aadams like sister who is obsessed with death. I said "Daddy & I made a will."
He asked what a will is.
I said "A will is a paper that we signed saying who gets to take care of you, what happens to our stuff, money & house."
So he asked again "Who gets us?"
I said "We picked the very best person for the job. Don't worry."
So he is begging to find out.
I told him that Daddy & I haven't discussed whether or not to tell them, so I would need to check with him first.
Then he guesses "It must be grandma in Florida?" (DH's mom) I told him no.
DH comes in for a kiss & tells him "Don't worry about it. You don't need to think of that."
He said "So why does Daddy get to decide when we know, don't you have some say in it?"
So I answered, "He thinks you're not ready for that information & it's unlikely to happen as both of us would have to die for you to go live with someone else. Playing us against each other isn't going to work."
I gave him a kiss goodnight & I hear him whisper, "Fine. Just do whatever Daddy says."
Have to admire his persistence.

Same thing here.
The only time they are sad at the thought of us dying are when it's time to go to bed & they want to talk about how sad they would be without us. To which the answer is always "I'll be sad too. Now go back to bed."
He is also obsessed with being an orphan. He thinks living in an orphanage would be fun. He asked me once how babies were born. I asked him back how he thought it happened. He said "I think it comes out of the mommy. Unless you're an orphan. Then that big bird with the big beak flies the babies to the orphanage."

I think you handled it very well. I can see Benjamin asking similar questions in the future so I may come to you for advice.
