Quick! Have my 3 hr GTT tomorrow, how long do I need to fast?
I just realized, the dr didn't tell me how long to fast.
I did ask the lab and they said 8 hrs, but now I am unsure if this is correct info and i cannot afford to take the test and go through all that if they are wrong.
Also can I have water? They told me I can.
I really want to do the test the right way. Please help!

I got to the lab at 7am, I last ate at about 9pm but my instructions said to fast beginning at 10pm for a 7am arrival.

I only took the 1 hour, so I don't know if it is different for the 3 hour, but I remember my doctor telling me that it was not necessary to fast. He said eat dinner normally and when I get up in the morning (I had the test at 8am) don't go eating a huge breakfast. I am neurotic so I didn't eat breakfast until after the test, but he said I could eat something small in the morning if you I wanted.

definitely should fast before the 3 hour. I stopped eating some time late in the evening.
you definitely can and should drink water in the interim. Also, bring water for after the test... you'll probably want it before you drive.

I had to be there at 7 and was told to fast from midnight on.

So what do you think I should do?
The lab told me 8 hours, I last ate at 1030. Appt is 7am.
But I am reading some people had to fast for 10-12 hours, I only fasted for 8.5.
I really can't afford to take the test the wrong way b/c it is going to be hard enough for me to get 4 needlesticks in one day.
Should I reschedule or do you think the 8.5 hrs is sufficient? I just am getting worried, I see some people fasted for 10-12 hrs.
Thoughts?

If your lab told you 8 hours I'm sure you are fine. Different labs use different measurements for testing, so that could be where the difference is.
Water is okay.

You should be fine. By the time you get there and set up more time will pass too. They take your fasting first, check that then let you drink the glucose drink. I think it will be fine.

Thanks everyone.
I have decided to reschedule the test. I just feel more comfortable fasting for longer to be sure I did the best I can. I have read online ideal fasting for the test is 12 hrs, so I will aim for that next time.
I wish my dr would have told me what to do, sigh.
