Re: I know this may sound petty....
Last night laying in bed...it's all quiet...and DH askes when we have to start rubbing stuff down there so I don't need one.
I couldn't do anything but crack up because I was wondering how long he was laying there thinking of this.

Re: I know this may sound petty....
That is totally understandable. After all, they are cutting there !
But I can tell you that I have had three, with two different doctors, and although I am opposed to them being performed universally, some people do need them. Mine did NOT hurt when they were done - I did not even know the firs two had been done! (In the Dr. Sears books, they talk about a natural numbing of that tissue taking place.) They healed nicely, with no complications, as do most people's.

That's funny...has he been reading up on stretching the skin to get you ready?

This scares me too as do most things about labor. I try not to think about it since I still have a long way to go.

Re: I know this may sound petty....
Try not to worry about it, my sister said she didn't feel it at all. She didn't have one for her 1st and tore - she said the recovery from that was miserable, the recovery from the second was much easier

OMG...so funny. I've been thinking about that a lot lately too.
I am totally afraid of the incision and the recovery.

He hasn't read anything...I think he is remembering it from the movie Baby Mama. it just came out of no where, I lost it!

Re: I know this may sound petty....
I was petrified of having one too! That was my WORST fear, but I am presently pregnant with #3 and I didn't have one for my first 2! For my first, I tore slightly (only required 1/2 stitch; didn't feel anything) and for the 2nd, had NO epis and NO tearing at all.
I'm hoping the same this time around.

Yes!! Absolutely!
Another thing that helps is to talk to your OB and ask them about their perenial massage. I came to find out with my second delivery (never thought to inquire about it when I was preggo the first time) that my OB had a 98% success rate at not having to perform an epis and no tearing because of the peri massage that she performs when you're in labor.
I'm having my 3 (in a new state, no less) and have a new OB and have stressed to him the importance of my not wanting an epis and although he has expressed that it's likely I won't need one, he has made a note of it.

Re: I know this may sound petty....
thanks for posting this! I'm really scared of this too. I'm going to be sure to talk to my Dr. about this.
When are we supposed to start kegels? I don't even think I know what they are!

Re: I know this may sound petty....
I think you can start kegels anytime.
I had one with my 1st not scared of having it with my 2nd because I did not feel a thing!! I SAW my doctor stitching me up and then I realized I had had one. I was in the throws of labor so that was the last thing I felt plus my dd was 8lbs! so i'm glad they did it she had a very round head lol.

meh.. I am not too concerned. When the time comes, whatever happens, happens. You will be so concerned about the baby that you wont even think about it.

Re: I know this may sound petty....
they give you a shot to numb it while you are having a contraction so you honestly do not even feel it.

Re: I know this may sound petty....
Not a dope AT ALL! I didn't know about this either. But my OB massaged and stretched my vagnal opening throughout my entire labor and as I pushed she continued to massage it and it helped stretch it out and prevented my needing an epis and I didn't tear. I didn't feel her doing anything either (I had an epidural)
