I would tell you who it was, but she would not want me putting it out there online, but it was a VERY close fam member.

she was exhasted from the birth, out of it, came to...looked down and someone strange was stitching her up.

She asked who he was...he said he's almost done.

She was upset over it...told dr and they actually redid it. thank god...who knows how she would have healed.

My feeling is, all of our doctors were once interns. They wouldn't be doctors if they hadn't been--and interning is how they learned their trade. If EVERYONE said "no interns", how would anyone learn? Chat Icon

Your OB will of course be in charge, but what's the harm in having someone there who's learning how to do the same thing that your Dr. does? I know I wouldn't want a Dr. who had never been an intern because no one wanted them there.

I agree with this. As long as my OB is in charge and observing EVERYTHING, I have no issues with interns. How else will they learn?

And if you choose a doctor who delivers at a teaching hospital, well then you chose the hospital. If you don't feel comfortable with interns there, then I would definitely ask your doctor and voice your concerns.

I would think and hope that you would be able to tell your OB that you arent comfortable with an intern.
It is one thing for them to check on you afterwards but during the delivery I wouldnt feel comfy either.

When I started building a relationship with the group I went to at 16 years old...I didn't even know where they were delivering babies, I just wanted my birth control pill...now after seeing them for over a decade and trusting them, I am not going to just go find any old Dr that doesn't go to a teaching hospital...I didn't choose the hospital...I chose the DR

You should voice your concerns to your doctor now - not when you are in the hospital. If you are able to request no interns, I'd think thats something that has to be arranged beforehand.

Re: Will hospital respect your wishes for no residents..

This is a very personal decision. Yes all experience doctors were interns once, and from this post it looks like lots of ladies are ok with interns being hands on during their delivery, good for you.

Call me selfish, but like another poster said, L&D is a stressful and scary time as it, I really don't need to worry about a stranger (resident or intern) making a mistake that I might have to deal with for the rest of my life.

I think it is something you should discuss with your doctor ahead of time. I delivered at Stony Brook and my midwife asked if I minded having a resident observe. I told her it was fine as long as she was just observing.

I have no issue with an intern observing and being instructed on how to do something simple by my doctor. I trust my Dr. enough to know she wouldn't leave me with some mook who didn't know what he/she was doing.

let's say your OB gets called into an emergency delivery or c-section right when you are about to give birth...I think it is wise to have a backup plan and discuss this with your OB ahead of time Chat Icon

I agree with you. A family member had a horrible experience with an intern once after delivery. She spoke up and problem was corrected...but it was an ordeal.

(they put an intern in charge of stitching her up)

Re: Will hospital respect your wishes for no residents..

I delivered at NS of Manhasset and the residents were like vultures, circling around me, trying to give me pitocin but I refused. They tried to get nasty but I said "No way" and that was that.

After my own doctor delivered Benji, a resident stitched me up while my doc was sitting right next to her, watching her every move and giving her directions. I was very tired and pretty much out of it so I didn't even say anything. Has it been under other cicrumstances I would have probably not allowed an intern put stitches on my most special of placesChat Icon but at that point I was not a fighter. To the intern's credit, she did a very nice job and everything healed very nicely.

And I do remember distinctly telling her in a very loud whisper "Make it tight, OK!!" Chat Icon Chat Icon I still get embarrassed thinking about it but I was still under epidural and very scared of my who ha getting all lose after childbirth. Yes, Legally they have to ask permission to be in attendance. If you do not want a resident or student observing or treating you make it know when you get there and don't feel bad to remind them. SOmetimes things can turn into a circus event in teaching hospitals, I know, I was a student once and worked in a teaching hospital!

I can't believe they were getting nasty with you!!

Personally I don't any residents in my room, I don't care, they can learn on someone else. JMHO I am def. going to speak with my doctor about this just to be sure we don't have any misunderstandings bc then I might have to get nasty Chat Icon to me, child birth is something very private, and I don't want any unnecessary people there.

Re: Will hospital respect your wishes for no residents..

I delivered at Winthrop and had my OB and the resident deliver DD.

The resident checked me and monitored me and was nothing but nice and professional. All the while I was panicking b/c DD was 7 weeks early.

I get where you are coming from, but the residents do know what they are doing.

Re: Will hospital respect your wishes for no residents..

I'm delivering at NSUH-Manhasset. During my first OB appt I talked to the doctor about residents. He said that the residents are very involved but they do NOTHING without his instruction. I also informed DH that if I am out of it he is to allow only 3rd years to examine me. I told him he had to ask any doc that walked in my room who they were and what year. My doctor also said that if I have a vaginal birth I can refuse an intern observing but if it's a c-section he needs the second person there.

I'm a little anxious about delivering at a teaching hospital but I'm trying to be prepared as possible and make sure the DH is aware of my wishes and will voice them approirately.

As for your personal concerns, def talk to your doctor aobut them.

A surgical resident (I believe he was the chief surgical resident?) did my c-section but my OB was there the entire time and did my stitches. I personally don't have a problem with it but I can certainly understand why someone would Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon

Re: Will hospital respect your wishes for no residents..

At a teaching hospital, the residents would be observing, not doing the delivery, your dr. will do the delivery.

I personally do not mind if a resident observes, I am a nurse and several times I was in the delivery room with patients observing as I interned. It's how they learn.

When I had my DD - my OB delivered her but throughout the day (I was in labor for 16 hours before I ended up with a c-section) it was the residents and attending Drs who would check to see how dilated and effaced I was. Usually, your OB will not be there the ENTIRE day when it could take you hours upon hours to be ready to push. During that time someone has to check your progress. Once I got closer it was my Dr or the nurse who checked and my dr. who performed the c-section.

I delivered at NSUH Manhasset both times. I was induced and residents were tending to me until my doc got there the next am for the last stage of labor. In fact, I really didn't see my doc until I was ready to start pushing. My cousin is a doctor and his wife is a physician's assistant who both did rotations in L&D and they told me that's normal.

Re: Will hospital respect your wishes for no residents..

I'll be delivering at Albany Medical Center which is also a teaching hospital. They ask you if you are willing to have interns assisting, you do not have to have them.

I can completely understand not wanting an intern for a first delivery, I don't think it is selfish at all. I don't plan an allowing interns for this delivery, for a 2nd, 3rd... No problem; but the first time when I don't know what to expect I want a Dr. who has done this many, many times before.
