Sometimes at teaching hospitals, they have residents come in and observe, or the Dr's oversee the residents as they do procedures...I know this because all of my md friends have delivered many babies during their residencies...just don't want no youngin delivering mineChat Icon JMO

Oooh.. I should of thought of that, I am delivering at Winthrop too. I don't mind them observing, but there will be no touching of me or delivery the baby unless you are my OB. No offense to them of course!

I would think if you choose to deliver at a teaching hospital then you go in knowing you might have some interns. I personally don't have a problem with it, as long as there are no complications, delivering a baby is a pretty standard thing.

I chose to deliver there because its close, convenient and my group delivers there...not because it is a teaching hospital..don't mind that it is...but only want my dr touching me and if I'm not letting my mom in the room during the delivery...then I don't want unnecessary strangers there either...for those who don't mind...great...for me...not so great....

yeah def talk to your ob.. that doesn't sound like anyting that my OB would do.. i would have thought that would only happen if you happen to deliver and your ob isn't available for some reason.and even then his (the ob's) standin should be second in line.. not some 2nd yr resident.. that would freak me out as well..

as for the peanut gallery watching, i don't remember much about that from my first pregnancy.. i do remember people but they weren't standing around watching, they were doing various jobs.. checking monitors, passing equipment to myob.. and then in another area of the room was a couple of other people who were there for the baby not for me.

couldn't agree more. I at first felt weird when I got my thyroid removed at Stony Brook. There were tons of residences, etc, but you get used to it.

Re: Will hospital respect your wishes for no residents..

I was induced at winthrop and pretty much it was interns until I was ready for delivery then my dr. was called in. but I will say this, listen to everything these interns do and say- 1 tried to give me Heparin- yes the blood thinner b/c those things they put on your legs for circulation were bothering me and I was able to walk not stuck in bed.

during the night 2 interns came in said I had dialated and the baby had a rapid heart beat and they will have to take the baby out right away- they called my dr. he came within minutes I was NOT dialated at all and the heart beat was fine!!!!! he gave me stadol and I had the baby the next day about 12 hours later!!!

so as I know our dr.s cant be there all the time and it is a teaching school- dont let them do anything you are not comfortable with!!!!

Not that I've been through this, but people other than your OB will probably be touching you to monitor your progress. Your OB will probably only be there at the end when you're ready to deliver. I think you'll mainly be dealing with the nurses up until you're ready to push.

How many OBs are in your practice? There are 6 or 7 in mine and if any of them aren't on call, they also work with another 3 doctor practice for deliveries. So far, I've met half of the doctors in my practice. I hope one of them will be there when I go into labor.

Re: Will hospital respect your wishes for no residents..

I had a procedure done at LIJ and they played the switcheroo on me. My dr let an intern do the procedure, and I was half out of it, so I didn't say no. Dr coached and the intern did the procedure but wound up not doing it 100% correctly and I had extra pain afterwards.

Now I know better, NEVER again. I have gone for other things since then and always have a discussion with my dr beforehand. I will say no, they cannot touch me.

When DH went for his surgery at NSUH (I don't know if they are a teaching hosp or not), I made sure to ask the dr if he was going to let "ANYONE" else do anything. Dr said no way. He does it all.

All of my friends that are Dr's and delivered babies as residents, will NOT be having their babies delivered by residents.....that's all I needed to hear from them when posing that question...

DH is a resident (surgery not OBGYN). Even though DH is a resident, I do not want a resident delivering me. I don't mind if they are in the room though.

My feeling is, all of our doctors were once interns. They wouldn't be doctors if they hadn't been--and interning is how they learned their trade. If EVERYONE said "no interns", how would anyone learn? Chat Icon

Your OB will of course be in charge, but what's the harm in having someone there who's learning how to do the same thing that your Dr. does? I know I wouldn't want a Dr. who had never been an intern because no one wanted them there.

Re: Will hospital respect your wishes for no residents..

I delivered at Winthrop. My dr. sent me right from the office to the hospital, so obviously he wasn't there. A resident took all my vitals and did a sono when I got there and a resident started the cervadil. My dr. came in to check on me and then communicated with the residents at the hospital overnight.

BUT..the next day after he started pitocin it was only him doing things. He did all the exams and made all the changes to my pitocin. Once you are started on pitcoin, the dr. has to stick around to monitor you.

When it came time for delivery it was just my dr. and the nurses. A med student came in and aske me if she could observe the delivery. At that point, I could care less who was there and I said OK. Believe it or not she was a great support! She was very calm and was so excited to see the delivery she got teary eyed when my DS was botn!

I don't choose to deliver at Winthrop, it is where my OB delivers, so I really don't have a choice. I am happy to be delivering there for a ton of reasons, it being a teaching hospital is not one of them. I am not comfortable whatsoever with any interns involved in my delivery process. I have nothing against them, but I am nervous as it is about giving birth and I don't need that extra anxiety.

I agree with you. A family member had a horrible experience with an intern once after delivery. She spoke up and problem was corrected...but it was an ordeal.

(they put an intern in charge of stitching her up)

Oh good lord...for those of you that don't know...INTERNS are in their FIRST year of residency...they may have never done this before....Make sure you and your sig other are aware of everything and everyone during your time in delivery...when the day comes, we only get one shot at this girls....

Re: Will hospital respect your wishes for no residents..

I would tell you who it was, but she would not want me putting it out there online, but it was a VERY close fam member.

she was exhasted from the birth, out of it, came to...looked down and someone strange was stitching her up.

She asked who he was...he said he's almost done.

She was upset over it...told dr and they actually redid it. thank god...who knows how she would have healed.
