Re: we sold old CDs!!!!

Holy crap. We probably have like 600 CDs. My DH is a crazy music buff.

I need to convince him to do this. We can just burn everything into the external hard drive. we never listen to real CDs anyway anymore unless it is like a "best of" that he compiles himself.

i WISH DH would do this. He has over 500 CD's and I know we could get at least a couple hundred for them.

Re: we sold old CDs!!!!

i'm in central nj.

we went to a store called TUNES. i know there was a previous thread that got the ball rolling for me and i recall there were LI local stores listed.

how i got dh to do it.....

i didn't tell him. i just pulled all his CDs off the shelf and put them next to the fireplace (where we tend to sit when on the laptop). i started to do it myself.

when he came home, i had already imported about 20CDs. when he asked what i was doing i told him that i was "thinking of him" and that this would make it easier for him to take his music with him. his bday is next week, i'm going to buy him the contraption so he can play the ipod in his car.

he bought my ruse: hook, line, and sinker! Chat Icon he then got excited about the process, and took over the importing.

hope that helps!

Re: we sold old CDs!!!!

Just keep in mind that it's illegal to do that, so I wouldn't make too many announcements to too many people about what you're doing.

Is this article saying it is illegal to upload your purchased CDs into an application like i-Tunes? That seems to be what I am getting out of it but that doesn't seem right. If that were the case, MP3 players never would have become legal to sell in the first place.

I remember reading a couple of years ago during the whole napster mess that if you purchase the CD, you are allowed to convert to MP3 for your own listening pleasure.

One conversion. For you. The person that bought the CD. Not your husband, father, grandmother, or the kid next door. You only, and only one copy.

Maybe this has changed, though.

There are places you can purchase dgital copies of songs/albums. Plus this is one of those new regulations that come into play as technology creates the demand for it.

The article seems to focus on music sharing - copying CDs and then sharing them with friends. They are saying this violates copyright laws since the friends did not purchase the music. Now, if you make a copy of the CD and then sell, you no longer have permission to use this music since you no longer own the copyright that comes with ownership.

The article is indicating that the RIAA is suing a man for copying his own personal CDs onto his personal computer. There has not yet been a decision though. So we don't know yet whether or not it is illegal. Not to mention, who's really going to check your computer? Maybe he got caught bringing his computer in to be repaired or something.
Congratulations on all the $$!!

This is one case in a federal district court in Arizona. It appears to me that there are cases pending in NY that may not come out the same.
