Polystyrene crown moulding
Has any one ever used this? We are looking to make some inexpensive upgrades to our condo once we close, and this is something I;ve considered.
Its in a building from 1907, and sadly someone decided to remove all the beautiful old details, except the fireplace and the original hardwoods which are hiding under the carpet.
At 2 dollars a square foot for moulding with pre mitered edges I was thinking this could be a cheap and easy DIY.
Anyone have any experiences with it?

Re: Polystyrene crown moulding
Is that the styrofoam moulding? The guy we're using for our crown & base moulding said he would never use the styrofoam moulding (DH asked him about it) b/c of how it wears so easily.
My dad used it in his house for crown and chair rail and the crown looks okay (some noticeable wear) but the chair rail looks horrible! And this is only after maybe a year or so. It's so chipped and cracked... my dad said he'd never go with styrofoam again.

I've been hearing about it on several of the home shows on DIYnetwork and HGTV. The professional contractors on those various shows seem to like it. It's cheaper, lighter, easier to work with, etc. than real wood. It's better for the environment. If it's crown molding, it's out of the way, so it shouldn't wear at all.
I'm planning on using some for some crown molding later on this year.

Same here and 6 years later not one problem. Once it's painted you can't even tell the difference
