Carseat querstion about latch system...

Does anyone know? If you have the latch system in your vehicle, is it safer to put them by the door in the backseat and use the latch system (five point harness), or keep them in the middle of the backseat and just use the seatbelt? TIA!

That's a really good question. I am trying to think which logically seems better and I'm just not sure. But can't you use the LATCH in the middle? Do you have LATCH on both side?

Re: Carseat querstion about latch system...

Apparently, according to my husband, there is no latch in the middle, just both sides....

I wonder who I would call to ask?

Why couldn't you use the LATCH anchors from both sides the one closest to the middle on each side? Check your car manual for a phone # - I called the manufacturer recently about LATCH too, our manual didn't give a weight limit for using the LATCH and they were knowledgeable.

When we had ours inspected we were told it was better on the side with latch than middle with the seat belt. He did say you shouldn't use the latch in the center if they are only on the sides.

I use the latch in the middle - one from the left side and one from the right side. I would check your car manual because ours said to use the side ones for a center installation.

When I went to the State Troopers to have my carseat inspected, they specifally said not to do this. He said that the anchors are not designed to work this way. I think it is the way they are angled.

I would put the carseat on the side, using the proper LATCH anchors. I always feel it is more secure this way than using the seatbelt.

The owner's manual for my car also stresses not to do this.

I actually ended up not using the latch installation on my seat, because we just couldn't get the straps tightened up enough so the seat wouldn't slide. It is more secure with the seatbelt.

Also, I know the middle seat is safer, but I feel like I am straining my back getting him in and out of the seat when it is behind the front passenger seat. I can't imagine not hurting myself if I had to get him in and out of the middle of the car.
