it's extremely upsetting to me that people are HAPPY that gas prices are up. Chat Icon

for most of us, we use what we need. and now that it's over $4 a gallon, it's really hurting.

my heat is kept on a timer and only used when we're home and in the house. i have oil heat. can't afford to spend money to switch to anything else.

i DO have an SUV--and i just finally paid it off. the amount of money it would cost me to buy a newer smaller car now would negate any savings. i drive over 50 miles a DAY JUST to go to work! i don't have a choice--no one lives within miles of me to carpool and there's no public transportation. i spend about $15 a day now just on gas. i can't find a closer job--it's not an option. i drive at 50mph on the highway to conserve gas, but it's still out of control.

my oil contract for my house is up next month--guess what that means??? i'll be stuck in a contract at over $4 for 2 years. that's double what i have now!! how am i supposed to find that money?

for people to think that this is a positive thing is sickening. i am literally sick to my stomach when i think of what i HAVE to spend on gas---we're not even talking extra things.

it's always a serious thing when people are affected. it's not so easy for some of us to make the changes we'd like.

It probably won't last though. As soon as prices go back down, people will forget this was ever a problem, and go back to their old ways. This is exactly what happened in the 80s after the last big crisis.

We really do need to find alternative fuels and rethink the whole drive everywhere culture that has sprung up, though the latter will take an even bigger commitment of time, research, and money than the former. So much of the U.S. is set up on a car culture model--there are very few places where you can walk most of the time.

I don't think it's going down again... It may go back to maybe $3 (when the cheney 'energy policy' is over!)... but not all the way down to $2... unlike the 80's, this is not some brief political crisis... the portion of this oil $$ increase is due actually to increased demand from china and india... that demand isn't going away.... it's here for good.

I wish I could say I was happy.

I think for a lot of people it won't make a difference in their life. They have money and will always have money. The people that are really hurt by this are the working class and small business owners.

I totally agree- and the small business owners will have to raise prices and lay off workers

(as well are large business)

I have no plans to trade in my SUV for anything other then another SUV

I Love my SUV and will be getting a new on next year.

Yes, I love that when it's "over" we will all glad gas is "low" at $3. It's not so long it was $2 something. Now we are happy when it's $3.

Please don't think that I meant I was happy because people are struggling. I am happy because this is the impetus that is needed for society to start putting demands on the government and industry to finally do something to get our dependence away from oil.
Unfortunately, like I have mentioned, fossil fuels are almost ALL depleted. We have to find another way. And the only way we can do this is to hold the proverbial gun to our politicians heads. And most people are content for everything to be status quo until they are affected in a negative way.

I am sorry you are having a hard time. We all are.Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon

Well said. For those that want to go "green" it is still quite difficult living in this society. It's not just the public's fault, our lack of government involvement in this issue leaves us with so few options on preserving our fossil fuels. So at least this gas hike is bringing public awareness and hopefully we can light a match under our gov't officials and demand change.

ITA!

Brown eyed girl. I am in the same boat you are! I drive 60 miles day to work. I already have a tiny tiny car. There's not much more I can do.

but the reason I agree that it is in some ways good that gas prices are high because I believe that the only place people really feel things is in their pocketbooks. I'm hoping that people will push lawmakers to make laws that promote clean, renewable energy. It's already happening just in the free market. The demand for hybrid cars has increased so now companies are making more of them. For DECADES people have known about global warming and the dangers to our economy, safety and enironment that our dependence on oil causes, but it takes a BIG thing to force people to act.

In the short term most of us are REALLY struggling. But I hope in the long term it will bring lasting change.

thanks for the explanation!

but i don't think this will *really* change anything. people like myself who recycle, reuse items like plastic bags, put our heat on timers, etc will do those things regardless of prices. people who don't do these things won't suddenly start--they'll just complain louder. people with massive hummers got them as status symbols, not because of their great gas mileage or off-road capabilities. so i think the majority will continue to drive--especially since they can afford the gas and brag about it.

it's the "little people" who get hurt. the ones on fixed incomes/single parents/disabled/seniors/young people.

i've been complaining to my DH about global warming (which he doesn't believe exists--he believes it's a democratic conspiracy Chat Icon ) and our country's need to recycle and find other types of fuel since we met. the price of gas had nothing to do with my feelings about our earth and conservation. i even started a plastic bottle recycling program in my class because i was so upset that the school didn't recycle and my kids were throwing out 20 plastic bottles a day! again, gas prices had nothing to do with it.

those of us who TRULY care will continue to care. those of us who only care about their bottom line and not the well being of our country and planet will only complain, but take little action.
