yes, my OB/GYN told my DH he had to get a SA before I was to go on Clomid. She wanted to rule out any male factor issues before letting me put serious hormones in my body. Which is exactly how she explained it to my husband too.

Yes. When I did take it years ago with my OB/GYN she had me do extensive bloodwork and a SA for my DH before going ahead with the Clomid.

No. But it was prescribed to me by my GYN not an RE.
I have not taken the clomid yet because I scheduled an appt with a RE to discuss it further first.

I'm not on Clomid but an SA was the first test we had done and it was ordered by our family doctor after only 6 months of trying and it was determined that we were dealing w/ MF IF. We went to a urologist specializing in fertility from there and we are now under the care of an RE.

Sorry to ask so many questions. I'm just trying to figure out what our next steps should be.
Yes. An SA is used to detect MF. My DH had one before I started clomid.
To test the women there are a variety of tests. You should have bloodwork done to test your hormones (on CD3) you should have a sonogram done to check your uterine lining and ovaries (also CD3). You should have an HSG to make sure your tubes are clear. And if all those tests come back normal and you are still not getting pregnant, you should have a post coital test to make sure your CM is not a hostile environment for sperm.
Think of it this way:
You may know you have an issue and you might start treating that (clomid). However if you also have a MF issue, then you are wasting your time. And since clomid can't be taken indefinitely, you are really wasting time.
If MF is severe enough you may have to move straight to IVF, in which clomid is a total waste of time.
So yes, it is important to have an SA done before starting any kind of fertility treatment.

I had a feeling this would be the answer. You do know that sperm counts, motility, etc. can fluctuate or change throughout a man's life, right? Due to infection or many other factors? One or more pregancies does not automatically mean that there is nothing wrong currently.

I thought that also. My GF has been going to an RE for sometime now, has been on Clomid, and they had her DH go for an SA even though he already has a son from a previous relationship.

Fertility can change for both men and women over the years. Just because one already has children does not mean that fertility issues cannot arise the second (or third or fourth) time around.
This is an unfortunate fact.

never said that it automatically means there is nothing wrong - what i DID say is that a dr. may prescribe clomid if it is not thought to be a male issue and this is because of having children

Actually, what you did say was an SA before prescribing Clomid is not necessary if you "KNOW" there is not an MF issue. You did not say anything on this thread about prescribing Clomid if there is no MF.
When I asked how someone would KNOW that there was no MF, you said if there were prior pregnancies. I disagree with that statement. End of story. No need to get defensive.

of course i did!! that was the original question!!!!
the question was did DH have to have SA prior to getting RX
MANY doctors will first ask if DH has other children or has he ever gotten anyone pregnant
i did not say it was a definite
NOTHING is definite and NONE of us are doctors
i dont know why everything i say or type is attacked

why didnt you just give your opinion
by phrasing it as a question is like "testin" someone
i think everyone thinks their doctor's words are the words of god and no one else can be right
all the more reason i dont need this stress
