Moms who have taken toddlers on planes.....

I am taking Logan to California soon BY MYSELFChat Icon and I need to know what I can bring to keep him occupied for 5 1/2 hours!?!?!?!?!?!?! I have a DVD player which will last for about 2 1/2 hours, I was thinking crayons and paper but that won't last very long. Any other ideas??

What time is the flight? I usually schedule them during nap/nighttime. That helps tremendously.

I also let the kids bring their own little backback with toys so they can keep themselves occupied and be sure to pack juiceboxes and snacks. Chat Icon

Oh, I should have added that...Not sure of the exact time but like 3:30. I won't nap him that day so HOPEFULLY he'll fall asleep on the plane but I'm not counting on it. He doesn't always nap and if he's excited he may not.

Juice boxes and snacks are a MUST!!!!

Actually, now that I think of it, can you bring juice boxes on the plane unopened or are they considered liquidChat Icon

I just flew 11 hours with Jordana who will turn 2 on Monday.

I brought a ton of toys, but since I flied at night, she didn't need any of them. She slept the whole plane ride there.

on the way back, she watched TV, ate and enjoyed running around the plane. She wasn't interested in her books or coloring.

Yes, you can. Just tell them before you put the stuff into the bins at security that it's for your baby to drink. They'll be okay with it. They WILL give you a problem if it's water, however.

bicosi: Thank you, very good to know. I figured for water they usually have the little water bottles that he will like but I will also bring his sippy empty so I can fill it on the plane.

What helped us were colorforms, a mini doodle pro, mini aquadoodle, books, crayons, and walking up and down the aisles a few times.

New toys still in the package. Unwrap them as you go. Playdoh kit(works great on the tray), new marker/coloring books, new DVD, any small activity that won't take up alot of room in your carry on. Oh and tons of snacks.....

Re: Moms who have taken toddlers on planes.....

One more question about the juice boxes. Do I take them out and tell security about them or just leave them in my bag and let them go through?

My DD LOVES books, magazines, catalogs, so I always buy new books before a trip and she gets very excited. She also loves to read the magazines on the plane. Chat Icon Chat Icon

Re: Moms who have taken toddlers on planes.....

careful with Benadryl- it makes DD hyper, NOT sleepy!!

I bought a giant coloring/sticker book of Dora & Little Einsteins at Stop & Shop. She loves peeling off the stickers. It's gigantic. Stickers usually last a long time. MagnaDoodle was a great suggestion too.

Re: Moms who have taken toddlers on planes.....

We got 2 coloring books that were brand new and didn't let her use them until we got on the plane. Also a little doodle-pad, the dvd player with some movies, snacks/juice and she loved the elmer's paints. They only work on the special paper and she had a great time with them.

Good luck!

at first when people suggested it, I thought they were outrageous and refused to drug my baby.

Well, the first leg of the flight to san fran, I was practically willing to sell my soul for a drop of it.

During the layover I bought some at the airport, did not knock him out, but calmed him down from needing to run.

Benadryl does NOT work for us- it makes her hyper big time.
Maddie likes playing cards( if you can get like a Dora/Diego/whatever character might be interesting to her, thats good) and she loves loves loves matchbox cars. They sell little Nicolodean ones with Dora, Backyardigans, Blues Clues , etc on them. Maddie loves them and it keeps her occupied for a while.
