Dividing Hostas

Let me preface this by saying that I sooooooooo do not have a green thumb so I need DETAILED instructions of how to do this. Chat Icon Chat Icon

I have GIGANTIC hostas in front of my house. They are so big that they are squishing all my other plants. I'd love to divide them and move them to my backyard.

So...
1. How do I do this?

2. When should I do this?

I figured doing it now would be better before they start to bloom again. Is that right?

Help me out green- thumbed ladies of LIF! Chat Icon Chat Icon

Re: Dividing Hostas

While I loathe hosta and plan on digging mine up and giving them to my mom, I did find this:

WikiHow to divide Hosta

Unfortunately, it appears this is best done months from now in fall. When you do transplant, make sure that you place them in spots like the one they came from so they'll thrive. Chat Icon

Re: Dividing Hostas

Hostas need to be split before they bloom in the spring but since they die back and are in the ground its easier to do it in the fall, when you can still see the plant.

I have to say, I really like my hostas.

I get compliments on them all the time because I swear, they are HUGE and look so pretty when they come in.

I'll take pics in late spring.

However, they are crowding all my other pretty plants and I want to downsize them a little.

Guess I'll have to wait until Fall. Chat Icon Chat Icon

Re: Dividing Hostas

I have to do this every year - we have so many hostas!

I usually do it in the spring, just as they're starting to come up. I guess thats the "wrong" way, but it works fine. I literally take an axe and cut it in half or quarters. Then dig up the severed piece and replant.

My mom did this last spring and they all survived.

Awesome! This was in easy layman's terms that I could understand.

I am sooooo not a gardener, but I can do this!

Thanks so much!

I'll post how they come out in a few weeks!!Chat Icon Chat Icon

I do the same thing...my mother has a ridiculous amount of hostas and each spring I go over as they are just coming up and divide them up and take some home for the side of my house.

We do the same with ours and have yet to kill one. They are very hard to kill!

Re: Dividing Hostas

DH literally takes a shovel and cuts the hosta in half to split it. Then we replant it ASAP. We do it usually in the spring and so far we havent killed any.

Re: Dividing Hostas

I love the way they look but I am afraid that they would take over my little yard
