Have you donated to a political campaign this year
ETA: I plan to.
While I agree there are a lot of worthy causes, I think deciding who the next president will be also has a huge impact on the causes I would otherwise give to -the poor, the environment, etc.

Personally, I feel there are much worthier recipients of my donation. I don't think rich people running for office need my money as much as people who can't afford to eat.

Exactly. My donations go to organizations that directly benefit people in need. I don't generally support "causes" financially.

It has honestly never crossed my mind to donate to a political campaign. I'm not very politics-oriented, so that has something to do with it. I would much rather donate money to help the homeless, children's organizations, or to organizations that do research toward treatments and cures for diseases. All are much more important in my book.

Re: Have you donated to a political campaign this year
I did for the first time ever. I agree that there are other worthy causes, and I donate to those as well, but I think this is a very important race and there is a candidate that I belive in very strongly and I believe that as president, my candidate will work to make healthcare available to sick people and those who can't afford it, help give every child a GOOD education and make college affordable to more Americans and do a lot to help those less fortunate, so maybe my $$, combined with the money of other contribute, will go to help more people than the $$ I gave to St. Jude's, which, while appreciated, probably only helped one or two children.

i never have, and i don't plan to, but i understand why people do - especially if they do so to support a candidate that they truly believe will help change the world for the better, so that there will be fewer hungry and impoverished people that will need our donations.

Re: Have you donated to a political campaign this year
these people running for office are millionaires... they don't need my money and they'll never see any of it. Also, I never find a candidate that I really like in ALL areas... I am one of those "lesser of two evils" voters, so there hasnt' been someone i like or support that much that I would give my money to.
And also, the more money in a campaign, the more ignorant, IMO some American people become in terms of how they vote. they base their votes on how whose bumper stickers they see, who has more commercials on TV, etc. Is that really making an informed decision? I think not....

On the other hand the money go to educating voters and reaching out to them, not necessarily to meaningless advertisement.
Another way to look at it is that if you feel so strongly that the person you support is the best candidate, who cares if they lured the voters with candy?

Re: Have you donated to a political campaign this year
there are people that donate money on both sides of the aisle.
I don't think donating money is the best way necessarily to wrestle up support for your candidate.
stumping the town really is. volunteers handing out flyers with real stats, web addresses and info is.
30 second spots on American Idol will surely reach a larger audience, but they don't say much (no time really)

But it seems like they don't usually go to handing out candy, they go to smear campaigns and nasty name-calling advertising. I hate that stuff, so I don't want any of my money going to it.
