What do you think of Capital One?

I know North Fork is about to change over and I was considering moving all of my accounts to another bank before the change. Does anyone bank with CO who cna shed some light?

ETA: I had a CC with them back in the day and I felt like they totally poached me on it, so I have alwyas ahted them..but I want to get more opinions before I change banks

I had a CC with them too.. and they scre*ed me over. I wouldnt trust them with anything..

My personal checking has been with Northfork for awhile now (prior to that when they were Greenpoint). I hate them and I am in the process of changing everything over to my joint account with my husband through Commerce.

Never had any problems with them yet.

NF and every bank they've been, without fail, will send me an overdraft notice at least once every 3 months or so. I swear it's a scam.

I've read a lot of personal finance articles that certain banks do this to their customers to make $$$ off them. And it's hard to argue with them to get the charges reversed.

Basically, what they do, is if you have used your debit card a couple times in a row, they will put a hold on your entire account until those charges clear completely, even if you have a few thousand dollars in your checking, and only did like 2 debits for ten or twenty dollars each.

It makes no sense to me. My husband had been using Commerce for awhile and every time this happened to me he was like "it has to be your bank" because he debits like crazy with his Commerce account, especially his business one.

Also, NF/GP and whoever they used to be, seems to be changing over every few years. I bet this is why!! They are losing business so try to get more $$$ by this scam!!

Hate Capital one as a credit card. Would never use them for banking.

I have a capital one CC & I HATE them. I only have a couple of hundred on the card & I'm going to pay it off shortly & never use it again. I only plan to leave the account open because I've had it for a while. I HATE them. Their customer service ***** & they are a bit shady.

Okay. That does it for me. I will be switching. I have been a greenpoint customer since I was 18, but since the conversion to Northfork ,now Capital One, I will be changing. No doubt.

DH uses Northfork for his banking and I hate them! I keep trying to get him to switch over to my credit union but he likes that NF has so many locations.
Now I read everyone elses response to them, I will definitely convince him to leave.
As for Captial One, I only had a c/c that I transfered a balance to for the 0% interest they were offering. I never used the card, so i never had any issues with them.

Funny you ask this... I can honestly say that if I had a bank account w/North Fork I too would change. Capital One makes me CRINGE! I too had a cc w/them back in the day - needless to say I hated them and vow'd to never use them again!

had the cc when i was 18....very shady, paid it off a few years later and cancelled the card, would never like to deal with them again

Hate this cc co. So many problems with them. My bill was late by 1 day, they put it on my credit report. I paid the bill off in full about 6 years ago and this one negative item is still on there. I tried numerous times to have it removed and they tell me, its up to us to decide when to have it removed.

would never use them. period.

the only thing i like about CO is their commercials (some of them are funny as heck)

other than that, i'd line the birdcage with their advertisements!!!! (that is, if i had a bird )

Yikes-- I have been using North Fork for years-- every since I opened my own personal checking post college.

It did not occur to me that anything would change, etc.

Now this makes me think I need to change over to DH's bank-- which is probably better since he has private banking with Citibank so there are lots of services. I am just so used to managing my money the way I have been for years.

that's said... another LI bank being bought out.

years ago, I had an account with EAB. Citigroup bought them out and they all became Citibanks. Everything I had with EAB rolled over, it was just a name change. Accoutn number stayed the sme as well as all the perks EAB had (like free checking, etc. etc.) that Citibank was not necessarily offering to new accocunts. I was even able to use EAB checks until the new ones came in.

If you like how you're account is set up, I would keep it. Capital One should be honoring all the terms of your current account regardless of the takeover.

Thir credit cards are horrible. Everyone I know, including myself, who has had a CC with them wound up closing them. They are con artists!

I would change banks!

ETA: I think one of the reasons they are able to have such great commercials is because they can use the money from the membership/annual fees they claim to not charge to pay for them. They stick you with those fees, no matter what your payment history is with them, after a certain amount of time you are with them...they never do it up-front.

not a fan...had some probs with them (credit card), so I am paying it right off when I can.

Wow - I am a little concerned about this. I have a CO CC and I love it - I have never had any problems...in fact I just used some of my miles for a trip to PR without any issues.


ETA: I just noticed this post was old...the funny thing is that JUST TODAY the NFB changed its sign to read CO bank...
