Age question....

Do you think age dictates in part how you behave or act?

I know so many people say age is just a number, but seriously would you think a 50 yr old partying in vegas like a 21 yr old was weird?

Would you pack up and go on a roadtrip at 60?

And why not?

I know Im relatively young but sometimes I get depressed b/c I feel my age holds me back from some things.

Is it that responsibility just grows with time?

just curious what others think.

Re: Age question....

i think its a combination of age, experience, responsibility and aknowledgement of the effects of your actions. And, also realizing that those actions affect all those around you.

Sure, i'd love to still dance on a bar in my bra and crawl home as the sun is coming up, but i doubt that my DH, employer, etc... would really appreciate such behaviors. So, diet coke, pjs and american idol it is. Chat Icon

I think we all like to let our hair down once in a while and I see nothing wrong with it.

If it's a daily thing where you can't act your age, then I think responsibility has to come into play.

It's hard...responsibility gets in the way, at least for me. I work in the public, and it would mortify me to run into people who saw me and then I expect them to respect me. It would make things weird.

I still go out from time to time, but I've just outgrown some things and no longer am interested in them.

Re: Age question....

It depends on what the situation is. I think age dictates somewhat how I behave. I'm not acting as stupidly as I did in my 20s because I have different responsibilities now.

I think of age as a number. I think you are never too old to have a good time. I see nothing wrong think a 50 year old partying in Vegas. Maybe partying like a drunken college student would be strange. That may not be an age thing. I think making foolish druken mistakes are different at 21, than at 50. You're supposed to have your act more together by then.

Since I did a 2 week road trip in my 20s, your question is perfect. Yes I would pack up & do a road trip at 60 years old. Only now, I'm not willing to sleep in the car , bungee jump or wear a bikini while driving a convertible so I can get tan. Um...and no one wants to see me do that at 40 either.Chat Icon

I remember reading a Long Islander article giving kudos to two 60+ year old women who were flailing their arms & spinning in circles on the streets of Huntington. It only took a few minutes for the writer to understand what was going on. There was a 3 year old shouting "Do the Hokey Pokey!"

I think it's obvious that responsibility SHOULD grow with time. Whether or not that happens is another story. Blowing my paycheck on an airline ticket to San Diego isn't an option anymore because now I have a mortgage. I'm sure there are people my age blowing their money on stupid things & shrugging their responsibilities.

Not sure if I'm answering the question at all as I'm rambling while trying to fix email.

Well my wondering is a once in a while thing..

Lets say the 25 yr old person had a good job, family etc as did the 55 yr old person. It would not be looked on as badly ( whatever "it"was) if done by a younger person right?

Why is that though?

Re: Age question....

I think it just depends on the person, not so much the age.

I have always been very careful what I "put out there" in public - whether I was 18 or 32.

But there will always be those people who NEED to be the center of attention and they will always be dancing on the bar, even when their nipples are scraping up pretzel dust 'cause their girls hang so low.

No, I think you got the gist of it totally.

Im trying to come up with good examples that would compare two different age groups by nothing but age? ( make sense?)

But lets say it wasnt a foolish act.

Like both the 20ish and the 60ish person took vacation time and secured all household duties etc etc and went traveling around Europe...

Some people would inevitably say about the older person " Their too old to be doing that" ....

I myself would say it and so I wonder where our age prejudices come from?

It's an expectation thing.

Old people are supposed to sit in rockers and knit.

It's a sterotype. And probably one of the most rapidly changing ones because it's the only onethat everyone will go through.

You don't get to be another race. It's rare to become another religion. You don't get to be another gender (unless you are Chat Icon )

But everyone gets old. Then they think "Hey - old people don't suck!"

Re: Age question....

I definitely lived up the college experience- drinking, hooking up, and lots of other things that actually make me blush now.

But, i have no regrets and completely laugh about it now, because it was just 'what college kids do'. it was (although not ideal or anything to brag about) what 'college kids do'.

ive run into people that i hooked up with, partied with, saw the craziest side of me, and i dont feel embarrased at all because it was sort of the norm for that period in our lives. But, if i did any of that stuff now, i think i'd cringe even just looking in the mirror, nevermind having to rehash it with anyone else.

I think it depends on the action, though.

I wouldn't think badly of the 55 year letting their hair down in whatever way once in a while. I actually think it would be awsome and hope to have the energy and/or desire at that age.

My friends & their families are campers and occasionally take long road trips during the summer and early fall like 5 week trips out west. THey have a great time and showed me pictures of things I never knew existed.

At 39, I do not go out as much as I did in my 20s. I lived on my own and met my financial and family obligations since I was 22 - so that wasn't different back then. I hate to admit it but to go out like I used to takes more out of me physically then it did 15 years ago. I still go out but normally it isn't until 4am anymore that just happens once in a while. Than it's a point of view versus an actual age thing. I wouldn't think either was foolish.

The 20 year old should do it before she has a family. The 60 year old has earned the right to kick back & enjoy themselves. If the 30 year old did it & their electricity was cut off, etc., that's foolish.

Maybe it's a life experience issue? I always thought my grandmother was cool because she drove a volkswagen, had one of the first walkmans, went back to college after she retired & traveled with her senior groups.

I agree that it is all about expectations. Normally, we think of people having certain times in their lives. There's a time to party and enjoy youth, a time to grow up and start a family, etc. But if you think about it, rockstars can party all their lives and we wouldn't blink an eye. We don't expect them to follow the regular phases of life. But with most people we do.

Re: Age question....

I think the difference btwn 50 and 21 has really something to do with seeing things differently. At 21 you tend to think your invinsible and nothing bad could possible happen, while at 50 youve seen more and aware of things, you tend to think more that something is going to happen.

I know even now stuff i did at 21, i would not even think of doing at 31. Not that im old, just i see the world differently. Im sure there are things now that i do that at 51 i would never do.. just how it works i guess.

Re: Age question....

I think I answered my own question in a way.

II think age prejudice is what happens.

That I think I WOULD think differently and think the elder person was strange but many people DONT...and I didnt realize that.

Re: Age question....

I don't so much think it's your age as it is where you are in your life. Most people are 'wild and crazy' in late teens and twenties because they (more or less) don't have as much responsibility as they will as they get older. Those lifestyles and preferences change as you get older because you may get married, take on financial responsibilities like a home, dedicate a large part of time to a career or kids or both! I think it's great that someone who is 60 can go on a roadtrip but people may think it's odd because its not the norm. Most 60 yr olds are still working, or saving for retirement or bogged down with family responsibilities etc.

I'm early 20's and I'm the opposite. I'm married, lived with DH since I was 19-20 and been paying rent and working full time since then while fitting in college. I got super responsible and hardly ever go out. Now we're saving for a house so when my girlfriends are out at bars or clubs I'm at home cooking dinner and running errands. It's not my age so much as it's my life experience and where I am that dictates what I do.

Re: Age question....

I think a lot of is

1. learning from experience. I have no desire to relive those weekly hangovers of college and 20's. Have I not had them in my 30s? yes, I have, but they are few and far between. I have much more to lose (job, house, profession, family) if I am stupid when I am drinking.

2. energy - maybe being sleep deprived for the last 3 years doesn't help, but there is no way that I could find the energy to party in Vegas. But in 10 years when my I'm bugging my kids to get up after noon - I hope that I can use that energy to do fun things. I think of the family I babysat for EVERY Friday night and a lot of Saturday nights too - and they always smelled of alcohol - so they were having fun!

on the other hand, I did a lot of road races and triathalons in my 20's and the one thing I remember - no matter how good of shape I was in (and there were times I was in great shape) there was always the 30, 40, 50 year old who could beat me (you could see it a lot in triathlons since they write your age on your leg!!!).
