Weird or not? Tacky? Not sure....

just curious and want opinions...not sure how i feel about this.

okay--so i just got a voice mail from a friend of mine---since getting married--we don't see each other that much cause she's still kind of in the "single" scene -- clubbing and stuff. (even though she has a 10 year old) -- and we're just not into that.

weeeeelll---she called to invite us over to a housewarming party she is throwing next sunday---at her new apartment. (she must have finally moved out of her baby's daddy house--they had been separated for the past year and she was just living there--but they weren't 'together')

in the voicemail she actually mentioned "i registered at Target---soooo hope to see you there"

um---i always figured housewarming registries were usually for when you buy a house or condo -- but she's just renting--and i think she might have moved in with her new boyfriend. plus--isn't it a little odd to leave a voicemail msg and say you're registered? i dunno--just seemed a little odd to me. was curious if i would be the only one to feel this way.

Re: Weird or not? Tacky? Not sure....

Regardless if she's paying a mortgage or paying a landlord, it's her new HOME. Be happy for her.

I'd agree and also think it's odd that she'd mention the registry over the phone.

i thnk it's Tacky that she mentioned it.

my friend registered when her and her BF moved into an apartment- it was the first time i had ever really seen that, so i thought it was kind of weird, but not necessarily tacky, i guess. But, mentioning it in a voicemail? SO tacky!

oh--i'm happy for her new home--its about time she got out of that house---i'm sure i'll still find her registry and give a gift. that's not my issue--i was just curious if this is something people would normally do or not. that's all

I think it's strange that she mentioned her registry over the phone. Honestly, I didn't know people even HAD "housewarming registries." I've never known anyone other than bride- or mothers-to-be to have registries.

However, if you're going to her new place, I would buy a little something as a housewarming gift. A home is a home whether you pay rent or a mortgage every month.

YES! this is why i find it odd. when you move in with a new boyfriend or something---how many people REGISTER for gifts for a housewarming party??

that is why i find it a little weird. cause i've never seen someone throw themself a housewarming party for moving in with someone and then registering for gifts. usually the registering part doesn't happen. thats why i was curious as to whether or not this is normal nowadays?

So Tacky!!.. who says that stuff on an answering machine? I only bought stuff for someones new place when it was something they bought, like a house. Except for my brother, he was renting an apartment and the family gave him stuff, but that was just b/c he was family.

I think its tacky that she registered AND tacky that she mentioned it.
I DO think since its her new home, you should bring something, but she shouldnt specifically ask for it.

First off, I don't think it matters if she rents or owns. Its her own, she needs to furnish it. That shouldn't make a difference.

I think that this is exactly what people probably said when mothers and brides started registering. The reality of the matter is, registering is a little tacky. Its telling people what you should buy.

The difference is, other people throw you a shower (baby or bridal) so you can ask someone else to spread the word.

You throw your own housewarming party, so how else are you going to spread the word?

I'm kind of torn on this. It's not something I would do, but on the other hand, I would intend to bring a housewarming gift anyway, so I'd rather get my friend something she wanted and thought she could use.

yeah i get that part----BUT if every time a couple moves in together they registered for "housewarming" gifts---well who knows how many registries there would be out there! plenty of people move in together and then later on they either get married or they don't---but most people do not register for gifts when they first move in together.

that was my issue with it---like is this some new trend that people are doing. we're moving in together--so lets have a party and register for people to buy us things.

i never go to somewhere empty handed--i would (and still will) have brought something--but it seemed weird to me that she registered. heck if i registered everytime i had a new apartment i think i'd have about 6 registries by now

Has your friend had housewarming parties before or had a bridal shower? Would she be able to furnish and/or afford much of the things she needs w/o a party regardless of whether she rents or owns?
