Smoker opinions needed..... (or non smoker opinions appreciated)
OK, so DH and I are non-smokers. I am looking for some opinions from smokers (or anyone in gereral) to see if what I am about to do would offend you.
Today I watched from the window in my house as my neighbor across the street proceeded to smoke his cigarette, finish it, throw it into the street and kick other small pieces of garbage off his property into the street.
DH and I went out later today and I am finding cigarette butts on our lawn. I am sure from the cars driving by and the wind blowing, his butts are ending up on our property.
The question is this... as a smoker, would you be offended if a neighbor asked you to not throw your cigarette butts into the street because they were ending up on their property?
I was truly disgusted when I saw him doing this today. There are lots of other issues with him that I won't go into, but this one bothers me... especially since we have a 5 month old who someday will be running around on our front lawn.. don't want him playing with dirty cigarettes. 
Any thoughts would be appreciated!!!!

I wouldn't be offended. Actually, I'd be kind of embarrassed that my nasty butts were ending up in your yard.
On another note though, I'll take this opportunity to pat myself on the back since it's now been 22 days since my last smoke!

hen I was a smoker...and I put out a cigarette outside...I would pick it up and throw it in the trash.
Personally, I dont think that asking your neighbor to not throw trash around will get the results that you are looking for...only make more trouble for you. Honestly, I pick up crap off of our lawan all the time that people throw when they pass...its all part of home ownership....
PS...people are pigs and they litter all over the place  Its really sad....

I'm an ex-smoker...and honestly, smoker or not, your neighbor is in the ABSOLUTE WRONG!!!!!!!
He shouldn't be littering PERIOD! Do I think he'll be offended - not so much, but he will be pizzed b/c it sounds like by his actions he just doesn't give a shyte.
I'm in the city, so I know Sanitation can and has given tickets for things like this...does your town have anything like that? I personally wouldn't approach him out of fear of his response...

I'm an ex-smoker (quit 8 months ago ) and I always had an ashtray on my porch so what happened to you wouldn't happen. I'd be embarassed if my neighbor had to come speak to me. Me personally- would let it pass for now, but if it consistently happens then I'd eventually say something Good Luck

I think someone who is throwing crap in the street doesn't really give a rat's azz where it ends up, as long as it isn't on HIS property. I think he is wrong and you can try talking to him, but I think it might backfire on you.

It is totally wrong of your neighbor, but I don't think it would matter if you said something. If he's throwing the butts in the street along with other pieces of trash, then he cares that his yard looks good, but not anyone elses. It would probably be a waste of time, and may cause tension.

ITA! It's definately 100% wrong of your neighbor. I would be sooo embarrassed if my neighbor had to talk to me about this. I won't even throw a ciggarette butt on my own lawn. But unfortunately i don't think the talk will matter too much to your neighbor.

I tend to think this too from personal experience. We have a neighbor whom we were very friendly with, who would do something rude. We asked him nicely to please try not to do such and such. He became even ruder and now is purposely spiteful.
I would say if he is throwing them there to begin with, he lacks manners and probably is just the type of person to not care. A sign that he won't care when you ask him either I hate to say....that is MO.
It would drive me insane too, but I just don't think this guy has any concept of manners, and won't get it if you try to explain (like my neighbor). Very frustrating I know.

I agree...especially if you have other issues with him and he knows about them...personally, I wouldn't bother saying anything to him...I just don't think it's going to get you anywhere.

Unfortunately, I think you are all right that he won't care if I say something to him. He is the kind of guy who:
Parks in front of our house pretty much every day when there is not a single car anywhere else on the entire street.
While talking to DH, he was getting in his car and before he got in he took the paper out of the inside of a new pack of cigarettes and threw it on the ground.
Asked DH when he heard we moved to NJ from Queens "were there a lot of blacks there?". (DH didn't even ask what he meant by that because I am sure it wasn't good)
The guy is a moron and it just s*cks that he is right across the street from us.
