Oscar winner Daniel Day Lewis was on "The Oprah Winfrey Show" today, ostensibly to talk about his current Oscar nomination -- but instead made an emotional statement on the death of Heath Ledger.
Breaking away from Oprah's prepared questions, Lewis choked-up as he spoke of the late actor -- even though he "didn't know him."

That was really nice.
It's true--when something tragic like that happens, it's hard to talk about anything else without at least acknowledging it.
On a side note, I'd like to "get to know" Daniel Day Lewis a little better.

wow - never knew much about DDL but i have a huge respect and admiration for him now - that was so sad and beautiful/touching at the same time... it is amazing how a person you don't know or maybe only knew a short time can touch others.

He is very classy and intelligent.
I think because he's very non-Hollywood.
His father was Poet Laureate of Ireland and he is married to the daughter of the great playwrite Arthur Miller.

He seemed so genuine, for Heath, like a connection between actors.

I was never a Heath Ledger fan but I thought Daniel Day Lewis' tribute in his acceptance was just awesome. 
ETA: I just watched the Oprah clip!! I didn't realize he never even met Heath!!! WOW ...
