What happens at the ultra screen?
Where do they draw blood from? Is that what they do? draw blood? I picture them sticking a needle in my belly and it freaks me out!

Well they do a sono to measure the neck on the baby (fluid) and they draw (for me 5) viles of blood to do all sorts of testing (what your blood type is, std's, if you're a CF carrier, etc).

For the Ultrascreen they did a finger prick and had me put 5 drops of blood on a paper they sent to the lab, in addition to the sono.

no big needle to the belly, rest assured 
they do a sonogram to check nuchal fold and assess baby's age and blood draw (they only took one vial for me because they were only checking for down syndrome, i had the other genetic tests done at the first doctor's visit).
eta: the blood was taken from the inside of my elbow

Not sure of the exact test that is done, but they measure the probability of having a baby with down syndrome. the result will be a number like 1 out XXX.

After getting poor results with the original 5 drops of blood, I returned the next week and had several vials of blood drawn for the quad screen.
Perhaps your doctor went straight to the quad screen.

Same here. I also got an external sonogram as well as an internal sonogram. The internal was to measure my ovaries, not the baby.
Last week, when I was 15w my midwife drew 1 more vial of blood for the quad test (which I learned today is actually the AFP test).

i have mine next tues and i was told only an sono (w/ full bladder) and my finger will be pricked for the lab...

Me too, but I had to do the finger prick myself  That way, when I go for the ultrascreen next week, they already have the results of the bloodwork.

They are testing your blood for 2 proteins: HcG and PAPP-A. Depending on those 2 levels, it can mean an increased risk. They take those numbers along with the nuchal fold number and plug it into a formula. That's how you get that 1 in xxx chance.

I did, they did the bloodwork at my drs office and the sono part at the hospital (outpatient)
