he should get .9 carat
the markup once you hit 1.0 is higher
plus the fiance probably can't visibly tell the difference between .9 and 1.0
this is an excellent tip too - if you go just under what you want - it can save a lot. for some reason, once you hit that mark and go above - the price sky rockets with each increase.

she wants a round or cushion
oh boy lol
round is the most expensive - like i wrote in my previous post. but if that is what she really wants then there might be a way - it is just about finding the right wholesaler. also, you could go with white gold instead of plat to save money - the price of plat is really crazy.
cushion would be less money than round b/c it less popular but if she really likes cushion - how about emerald?? they have DEALS on emeralds! it is classic - like cushion just a little longer in shape - and classic! when DH was shopping they offered him, for the same money he was spending on my round, an emerald only it was two + carats larger!!!!! that is how big a difference it can be between certain shapes - he went with the round b/c i was not willing to budge even if it meant i could get the same quality - just bigger. but if their budget is restricted - they could look into that so they can still get great quality.

careful with the emerald cuts. If they have flaws, sometimes they can be seen without the loupe.

yes. this is true - b/c of the cut it is the easiest to see the flaws but if you get a good quality one - and since the prices on them are so good they should be able to get a good quality one w/o a prob. the deal my dealer was offering us on a bunch of different emeralds was amazing - and they were all flawless and i remember certain prices so with their budget - it def can be done. but yeah - you can't go shoddy on an emerald - you can tell.

Posted by JenniferEver I might sacrifice color, go to an F or something, it's hard to tell the difference and it doesn't sacrifice sparkle. Going to F isn't much of a sacrifice - it's still considered colorless. Going to an H-I would be more of a sacrifice.
That's a sacrifice I would not be willing to make!
Yikes, my stone is H and you never tell the difference to the naked eye..even under a loop many jewelers have mistaken it for a G. It can make a ton of difference in price to drop to near colorless, but I would drop the size rather than any of the 4 Cs.
You're right, you can only tell the difference next to other stones...Everyone has things they really like about diamonds, or things they wanted..for some reason I obsessed over color and clarity. My cut is not the best (I have an extra facet)...
I agree, I'd drop size first. If the the other 3 C's are there it will look better anyway!

Re: Diamond question
too bad she wants a diamond...
she could get a honking, gorgeous blue or pink sapphire or ruby surrounded by diamonds for that price...and it'd be the tip top in all the c's on the stone AND on the diamonds in the setting.

He didn't even want the antique stones that I liked - b/c some of the Cs back then were a little weak. He wound up giving me a new diamond in an antique (reproduction) setting. Best of both worlds, I suppose.

try and find a private smaller jeweler with less mark up. My DH bought my ring for less then that, and I have a very good stone, and it is .90 carats..... it was 5 years ago, but still, I think it is doable.
ITA as well....my ering center stone is 1 carat Princess Cut and the diamond is flawless, as well at my side stones, DH spent within your friends FH's budget...I couldn't love my ring anymore.

yes but he got a 0% credit card so he can pay the difference
why?
ok, truth be told, I did not ALLOW my dh to spend a lot of money on my ering.
why? b/c that is money better well spent than on an adornment for my hand.
I got a honking sapphire that was beautiful, different, unique and SANS the DeBeers markup.
now, I know girls like diamonds...but would anyone want their future husband to go into DEBT so their personal ring specifications can be met ?
I couldn't...I could NEVER be happy if my husband spent more than he had...went into debt...for a RING.

Re: Diamond question updated
Is she set on a "solitaire"?
I have a 3 stone e-ring and it's 1 carat but divided in 3 stones. With the setting I have it looks bigger than 1 carat and it's really nice.
ETA: the ring was much cheaper that way and I love it.

Does that even include the ring? The ring and setting may set him back another $500-1k, for just a plain gold band.

totally agree. 1.7 carats is HUGE. Much bigger than the avg e-ring, and at that size you WILL notice the color more.
Plus he should try to stick with his budget. If his gf is that demanding there's a problem

Re: Diamond question updated
The lowest color I would go is G or H... I am very color sensitive, and even a G looks yellow to me. Make sure the cut is Blue Nile's "very good".

Re: Diamond question updated
ITA agree, I gave DH a limit of $2,000 on my e-ring, I told him if he felt the need to spend more than that to prove he loved me, I could give him the acct. number for my student loans,
He went to diamond.com and got a beautiful 1/2 carat - I am very happy that he went for quality over quantity
I just did a search on their site and came up with this:

I agree as well. My DH got what he could afford at the time. I did not give him any guidelines, and he decided to get a smaller stone but not sacrifice anything else. My ring sparkles like nothing else. Most importantly, he did not go into debt over the ring. I would not put it on the card if I were him, if he doesn't pay it off during the 0% time, he will be sacked with all he interest at once.
