Weight gain

How much weight are you supposed to gain from start to finish? Some people are telling me no more than 25, some 30.

Re: Weight gain

most doctors and books will tell you 25-35 pounds depending on your weight. so if you're a tiny bit overweight to begin with, you should really gain no more than 25 pounds.

that being said, ask most women on here and they will tell you that even when you watch what you eat you really can't control how much weight your body puts on - it will gain what it wants.

Very true. I gained 47 with Ryan, and about 39 with Erin. I ate the same as I normally did and still gained what I did. I seriously believe that your body will put on what it will and you have little control over it. Luckily, my Dr's never even mentioned it to me and never said- you are gaining too much.

Re: Weight gain

I am almost 18 weeks and have gained nothing. I actually lost 6 pounds from my 1st to 2nd appointments & stayed the same weight at my 3rd. My Dr. does not seem concerned because I am eating healthy (actually for the most part much better then before being preggo!!).

I am overweight to begin with, but I am NOT trying to not gain weight, it is just happening that way.

Re: Weight gain

Anywhere between 20-30 pounds is ok. Really anything over that could be excessive depending on if you are underweight, normal weight or overweight before you got pregnant. Think of it this way, the more you gain the more you have to lose. Plus there have been numerous studies that show that women that gain a lot of weight are more likely to wind up with c-sections. Although that was not at all true with me.

Re: Weight gain

With DD#1 I gained 21lbs total and I was 117lbs the day of my 1st visit, so I was not overweight. However I was very sick for 20 weeks(hyperemesis) and actually lost 10 lbs in that time.
This time I am almost 26 weeks and up 8lbs total( I was 116 at my first visit) but was also very sick in the 1st 17 weeks(lost 7lbs). Everyone is different, but as long you do not over eat, I think it is all okay.

Re: Weight gain

I am up 21lbs and I am 38w4d. I have GD though so I have to watch my diet. If I were allowed to eat ice cream and cookies I'm sure I would have gained more.

Re: Weight gain

I lost 15 lbs from the time of my first doctors visit until now. I haven't gained any back and I am 17 weeks. Doctor told me to stop losing and right now I am just maintaining. Baby is getting bigger but my weight is staying stable.

Re: Weight gain

At 39 weeks I'm up 48 pounds. I bet I'll break 50 before this baby comes out. And the funny thing is everyone says I'm all belly but I know it's more than that. My belly is just THAT much larger than everything else.

I too am at 23 LBS at almost 32 weeks. BUT I gained 50 and more with my other two. I was thinner then when I started. AND I ate copious amounts of ice cream with them. I did hear about 35 LBS is a good number. But it all depends on your body type etc.

Re: Weight gain

By my 24 week appt I had gained 19ibs (I was no light-weight to start, though), then I got diagnosed w/GD & have actually lost 3or4 lbs (I'm 34 1/2wks). If I wasn't on a restricted diet, G-d only knows how huge I'd be.

Re: Weight gain

My Dr suggested 25lbs. At last visit (16wks) I had gained a total of 7lbs. Next week is my 20wk, so we'll see what the scale says then.

Re: Weight gain

Straight from a pregnancy website

How much weight should I gain during my pregnancy?
It depends on your height and weight, or body mass index (BMI), before you conceived. You can calculate your BMI here.

If pre-pregnancy weight was in the healthy range for your height according to your healthcare provider (a BMI of 18.5 to 24.9), you should gain between 25 and 35 pounds, gaining 2 to 5 pounds in the first trimester and about 1 pound per week for the rest of your pregnancy for the optimal growth of your baby.

If you were underweight for your height at conception (a BMI below 18.5), you should gain 28 to 40 pounds. If you were overweight for your height (a BMI of 25 to 29.9), you should gain 15 to 25 pounds. If you were obese (a BMI of 30 or higher), you should gain no more than 15 pounds. If you're having twins you should gain about 35 to 45 pounds. If you fall into any of these four categories, talk to your healthcare provider about how much you should gain each month.
