what seems to be holding me back is the awkwardness of when you have company over. do you bf right there in front of everyone? do you excuse yourself? it seems awkward to me. Especially when you are in the hospital and everyone is there visiting and its time to feed the baby. you have no where to go and I feel like everyone would be uncomfortable.
I wasn't very modest in front of my immediate family while BFing in the hospital or even at home. When company comes over, I excuse myself. I am looking into buying a shawl or wrap. It did stink on Christmas having to go into the next room every 2 1/2- 3 hours but I would make my sis or DH come keep me company. I wish our society was more accepting of it, so I could just whip my boob out and feed my kid!
I go in a different room. If company is female, they usually follow me and they don't mind. I let them know I am OK with it if they are, and they usually follow.
I bought a wrap, and now breastfed outside a couple of times. Its very private and most people just ignore it, or smile.

Wonderful post and congratulations on doing so well! It definitely helped me with the weight lose and getting back to my pre-pregnancy body! It is hard at first but later becomes just so easy and natural. Not to mentions that it is one of the most special, bonding and rewarding experiences that you will ever have with your child, the kind that you will cherish for the rest of your life, long after they are weaned!

i think you can only do what you feel comfortable with. i am sure your family and friends would understand if you wanted to excuse yourself from the room for a little while. or at the hospital, dh can tell people you need "a breather" or a break and people can clear out for a little while. a lot of people in my neighborhood breast feed at cafes and shops, which i am not sure i could do. but i've also seen people using their sling or a light blanket for some coverage.

Not a Mom or pregnant but this is a great idea-you could even make a joke about it like OK everybody out I'm whipping out the boob. My SIL breast fed in front of us all the time with a blanket over her.

Re: For those on the fence about BFing.....
I worried about the modesty issue at first as well. Believe me- when you've had your legs spread wide open and pushed until you poop on a table in front of loved ones and strangers alike, a little boob action is NOTHING to about.
In fact, my poor father had me pumping at the dinner table when I was 2 weeks PP. Classy, eh?
When I have company, or I'm at someones house, I excuse myself to another room. OR I have pre-pumped bottles that I use to feed her.
As for visitors in the hospital- they had to vacate the premises for me. BFing is HARD at first and the last thing I (and DD) needed were added distractions. I recommend you do the same. The quicker you and DC pick it up and master, the happier you both will be.
Good Luck to all future BFers!!

Re: For those on the fence about BFing.....
I am only 1 week pp and I will say that BF is hard. I like to say that I am formula feeding and supplementing with BM. But its an amazing experience and the benefits are so worth it in my eyes for my son.
After one week I will say that its is getting easier, I dont produce enough to satisfy my big eater but I like knowing that he is getting both my milk and at the same time the measurable amount of formula.
I would recommend that anyone who is on the fence see a LC or take a class in advance and talk to the LC in the hospital she was a big help to me. Also give it a try for at least a week or 2 before deciding what you want to do.
As far as BF in front of people, in the hospital I would just tell people I had to nurse and my DH or MIL were welcome to stay but that was it, they would pull the curtain closed and go outside for a bit. Also its amazing how all your shyness tends to vanish once you have a baby. I had a section but I cant tell you how many people saw me naked that day.... And the LC was grabbing my boob to help so it really changes your perspective.
When people are here I just go into my bedroom and get comfy with DS and like someone else said if its a female who I feel comfortable with I tell them they are more than welcome to follow me otherwise I will be out in a X minutes.
Good Luck to everyone!
PS I have lost 25 lbs in 1 week however I cant say its really BF for me I think its having a nearly 10 lb baby

ITA. I was not able to BF, but I did pump and I lost a lot of weight in the first 2 weeks. And I know it helped my baby girl.
