I was at a client's facility once and I needed to see someone about some lab work. I was told to see Precious. Yep, her name was Precious.

There used to be a girl on my floor whose name was Geisha, as in Japanese prostitute. A fine name to give your child, indeed.

Someone correct me if I am wrong - but a Geisha is actually NOT a prostitute!!

Geishas are not prostitutes in Japanese culture. They are considered to be professional women who are trained from a very young age in conversation and performance (dancing, singing) in order to entertain men at social and professional gatherings.

Geishas are courtesan, that would probably be the best equivalent in western culture. Technical they are so much more then prostitutes, but s e x is definitely something they can provide as part of their service, even though traditionally, they were just entertainers and nothing else.

Considering the associations that word has in Wensten culture I think it was a just a really bizarre name to give to a child.

I went to high school with a Salahudin Moulta-Ali. In a school I worked at there was a Fuschia, a Diamond, and a Unique. By the way people respond to Cailen's name I am assuming his is rather unique as well

DW worked with sisters. Queen Anne <last name> and Queen Mary <last name>

Went to school with a Crystal. Nice name..... unless your last name is Bell..... Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon

Another classmate was Bambi. She had a rough time in school.... Chat Icon

my deceased sister's name is Crystal. I think its a pretty name. it is also know the middle name of my daughter.

My sister's name is Crystal too.

I've known several Crystal's. I don't find it to be a weird name at all!

I think the OP's point was that Crystal Bell sounds like an object (or very similar to crystal ball), not that the name Crystal is odd. I too, think it's very pretty.

Thanks for pointing that out. I did clarify in a follow-up post that I have nothing against Crystal. It's a very nice name. However, if your last name is Bell, kids in school will comment on your entire name of "Crystal Bell", never on the name "Crystal". Crystal by itself, or with the vast majority of last names will never be made fun of, since it is a nice name.

My DD - her name is Milani Leila. Her first name was a combo of my first name and DH's. Unfortunatley, we found out her name is not as "unique" as we thought. There's a make-up line called Milani, and the girl who holds case #13 on Deal or no deal her name is Leyla Milani. Chat Icon

We still love her name though Chat Icon

Milani is not in the top 1000 names for the last 15 years, so it still is pretty unique. With 6 billion people on the planet, odds are someone else has the same name, but at least you won't have 4 other Milani's in DD's classes... Chat Icon

Re: Do you know anyone with a VERY unique name?

I am NOT kidding!!

I met God

This mail guy in my office, we always called him G. I said I felt Ghetto calling him G so I asked his real name. He said I wouldn’t believe him. His name is God.

God is a black man
God is a Yankee fan

And I got to honestly say that as an Agnostic I invited God to my wedding but he was a no show.

I asked the obvious questions:
1. What were your parents thinking?
2. How hard was it to grow up with that name?
3. What would you name your kids?

ETA: By the way I checked is driver’s license and paycheck stub because I didn’t believe him

1. Thought it was a nice name
2. It was Hell (he said with a chuckle)
3. Cain and Abel if he could. But he won’t name his son Jesus! He said it was bad enough his son will always be the Son of God to begin with.
