i knew a Donato de Donato when I worked at my last company. I always wondered why his parents didn't give him a different first name. Chat Icon

While "unique" names can be challenging for some, they can create and build individualism and character in others.

I agree but, some of these names are out of control (the Jello twins for one)...

Although kids can find a way to make fun of you even when you have a more common name if they really want to!

My cousins are Cavin and Keegan ( actually LOVE both of these names!)

I went to college with Hung and Too (Vietnamese brothers)

I have taught Bich and Koc (both pronounced how you think they would be Chat Icon )

Re: Do you know anyone with a VERY unique name?

my sister's name is a bit unusual (she would kill me if I posted it on a public forum) but my mom trying to "Americanize" us, tried to spell it phoenetically in English.

My great aunt was Athala - it was a misspelled Biblical name - Althea

I know an Aragorn and Irulan (separately) - but they are both names from literature. In fact, DH probably would have loved it if I agreed to Paul or Muad'Dib from Dune.

some of those names were around when I first started teaching - they are on snopes

Re: Do you know anyone with a VERY unique name?

It's funny. A lot of the names posted as "unique," while not common to me, don't seem unusual. I grew up in a very Irish neighborhood, so names like Siobhan or Seamus or Eamonn are as common here as Elizabeth or Diane or Kevin. I also went to a public school in Queens, where names like Chi-Hee or Chantip weren't looked on as different because we had so many ethnicities.

But, I'll add one anyway. DH went to college with a girl named Sunshine Day. Think her parents were Brady Bunch fans?

But these people who name their kids Nemo and Raspberry and spelling things backwards and making crap up should be shot... those kids are going to be teased all their lives just because their parents are idiots or ignorant or both! This one girl i know named her child Cavan because she told me it was an Irish name. To myself I was like, it's a PLACE in Ireland... that's like naming your kid Arkansas... Chat Icon

Wow, that's really harsh. My first born son will be named Cavan after my beloved Grandmother who came from Cavan and came to the US by herself at 19 in the the 1920s. That PLACE in Ireland made her the strong-willed woman she was and that is something that I personally treasure. It will be a tribute to her. It's Gavan with a C, sweetheart, far from 'Arkansas.' And having lived in Ireland, read Irish literature (including name books), there are quite a few Cavans running around.

My sister is named Kerry, as in County Kerry in Ireland, in honor of my grandfather.

To each there own opinion, but to say I should be shot, and that I'm an idiot and ignorant is totally out of line.

While "unique" names can be challenging for some, they can create and build individualism and character in others.

I think Cavan is an awesome name Chat Icon

And to the person who said it's like naming your child Arkansas...I don't think its quite like that...

What about the name Virginia? Or Alexandria (county in VA). I'm sure there are tons of others..not awful or weird in my opinion, those comments were quite harsh!!

I think the OP's point was that Crystal Bell sounds like an object (or very similar to crystal ball), not that the name Crystal is odd. I too, think it's very pretty.

my cousin in Ireland named her daughter Daisy and she got a lot of flack for that....

Ethnic names are bgreat because I think they really connect kids with their culture. I teach in a school with a lot of Asian (mainly Indian) children and some of those names are just beautiful and very unique in the United States.

But these people who name their kids Nemo and Raspberry and spelling things backwards and making crap up should be shot... those kids are going to be teased all their lives just because their parents are idiots or ignorant or both! What's wrong with the name Daisy? My daughters name is Clover and my sons name is Roman. I hardly consider my myself or DH idiots or ignorant. What a lovely opinion you have.

BTW... I grew up knowing a lot of Italian boys named Nemo (obviously it was before the movie)

I NEVER said i didn't like the name Daisy. In fact, I tihnk it's quite cute! I just said that she got a lot of flack for it because it was too unique! i happen to think it's adorable!!

Sorry you were offended... it was not my intent... as a daughter of Irish parents and also having lived over in Ireland, I just feel that naming kids after a place in Ireland is a bit of a stretch.... in Ireland, you would not find many people, if at all, with those names. IN fact, many Irish people laugh at Irish Americans at their choices for seemingly "Irish' names.

I think your sentiment for maing your child Cavan is beautiful, but although my parents are from Ireland, I am not about to name a kid Donegal or Leitrim... just a matter of opinion. and i my true intent was really to address the majority of Americans (clearly not yourself as you have a connection to Cavan) that have NO idea when they name a kid...they go around saying it's an Irish name and they know nothing about it... does that make sense???

again, sorry for any hurt feelings... Chat Icon

I didn't read the whole thread, so I don;t know if it was mentioned yet, but I read Newsday and there was a girl on the Review Crew about a year ago who's name was Rainbow. I always felt sorry for her.
