My dad is Seamus (pronounced Sha-mus) and my cousin is Sinead (pronounced Shin-aid). My bro is Sean and I know a Siobhan too.

Lots of -sh- sounding Gaelic names. Chat Icon

Oh, I had a friend in HS named Nargis-only one I've met.

Thought of another: I knew a Tagor. She was Haitian, I think, so I don't know if that's common for Haitians or not.

There was a girl at a school I used to teach at named Raspberry.

my cousin in Ireland named her daughter Daisy and she got a lot of flack for that....

The weirdest ones I've had in my class have been an Archellus and a Deja (as in Deja vu)

Ethnic names are bgreat because I think they really connect kids with their culture. I teach in a school with a lot of Asian (mainly Indian) children and some of those names are just beautiful and very unique in the United States.

But these people who name their kids Nemo and Raspberry and spelling things backwards and making crap up should be shot... those kids are going to be teased all their lives just because their parents are idiots or ignorant or both! This one girl i know named her child Cavan because she told me it was an Irish name. To myself I was like, it's a PLACE in Ireland... that's like naming your kid Arkansas... Chat Icon

Nemo is a real name and has been around far longer than the movie in many Italian families. It may not be that common, but it's not entirely uncommon either.

In addition to be a county in Ireland, Cavan is an Irish name. It's not as common as some first names, but it IS an Irish name, mainly used for boys. It's more common as a surname, but many first names are also common surnames (Connor, Ryan, etc.) It's not at all like naming your child Arkansas... unless you consider naming your child Kerry like naming your child Arkansas, too.

I hardly think a child is destined to a life of teasing based solely on their name. There are plenty of more common names that are just as easy to tease... Naming a child something unique doesn't make parents stupid or ignorant either.

As for interesting names I've encountered, I worked at a law firm where the secretary's name was Lady.

My family is from Cavan and although I understand that it is a name, it is very uncommon over there. You'd be laughed out of the place for naming your son or daughter "Cavan". Naming your child "Kerry" and naming your child "Cavan" have totally different implications, which I won't get into here.

As a matter of fact, my name, Colleen, is very uncommon there as well. It is a very common Irish-American name. It is actually an Irish word. In Irish it means "little girl". Many times when I've been in Ireland and I've told people my name, they have thought I was kidding them.

I also think the OP was saying that Daisy was considered an uncommon name in Ireland, which it is....

Wow, that's really harsh. My first born son will be named Cavan after my beloved Grandmother who came from Cavan and came to the US by herself at 19 in the the 1920s. That PLACE in Ireland made her the strong-willed woman she was and that is something that I personally treasure. It will be a tribute to her. It's Gavan with a C, sweetheart, far from 'Arkansas.' And having lived in Ireland, read Irish literature (including name books), there are quite a few Cavans running around.

My sister is named Kerry, as in County Kerry in Ireland, in honor of my grandfather.

To each there own opinion, but to say I should be shot, and that I'm an idiot and ignorant is totally out of line.

While "unique" names can be challenging for some, they can create and build individualism and character in others.
