There used to be a girl on my floor whose name was Geisha, as in Japanise prostitute. A fine name to give your child, indeed.

Someone correct me if I am wrong - but a Geisha is actually NOT a prostitute!!

oK...this is a really bad story.Chat Icon
My cousin is a teacher and told me that she has a student named Female. Pronounced Fee Mal Lay. Apparently, these people thought that when they had to choose a name to put on the birth certificate, their name choices were Male or Female. They actually thought that this was the correct pronunciation of the word too! Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon

I knew a girl named Radiance in junior high. How could you ever have a bad day with a name like that! So much pressure. lol. I also know of someone named Sinus Payne Chat Icon Chat Icon

There was a girl at a school I used to teach at named Raspberry.

my cousin in Ireland named her daughter Daisy and she got a lot of flack for that....

The weirdest ones I've had in my class have been an Archellus and a Deja (as in Deja vu)

Ethnic names are bgreat because I think they really connect kids with their culture. I teach in a school with a lot of Asian (mainly Indian) children and some of those names are just beautiful and very unique in the United States.

But these people who name their kids Nemo and Raspberry and spelling things backwards and making crap up should be shot... those kids are going to be teased all their lives just because their parents are idiots or ignorant or both! This one girl i know named her child Cavan because she told me it was an Irish name. To myself I was like, it's a PLACE in Ireland... that's like naming your kid Arkansas... Chat Icon

Nemo is a real name and has been around far longer than the movie in many Italian families. It may not be that common, but it's not entirely uncommon either.

In addition to be a county in Ireland, Cavan is an Irish name. It's not as common as some first names, but it IS an Irish name, mainly used for boys. It's more common as a surname, but many first names are also common surnames (Connor, Ryan, etc.) It's not at all like naming your child Arkansas... unless you consider naming your child Kerry like naming your child Arkansas, too.

I hardly think a child is destined to a life of teasing based solely on their name. There are plenty of more common names that are just as easy to tease... Naming a child something unique doesn't make parents stupid or ignorant either.

As for interesting names I've encountered, I worked at a law firm where the secretary's name was Lady.

Geishas are not prostitutes in Japanese culture. They are considered to be professional women who are trained from a very young age in conversation and performance (dancing, singing) in order to entertain men at social and professional gatherings.

Re: Do you know anyone with a VERY unique name?

My mother had a student named Jesus, only pronounced the English way, not the Spanish way. I thought that was interesting. I knew plenty of people named Jesus (Spanish pronunciation), but never anyone who prounced it by the English pronunciation. I guess the name itself isn't entirely unique, but with that pronunciation, it was different.

Re: Do you know anyone with a VERY unique name?

A cousin named her son Sorin - after the founder of Notre Dame. Her and her DH graduated from there.

My name is common but spelled very differently and I like it that way. I've seen people roll their eyes though --as if my parents didn't know how to spell. Chat Icon I would definitely give my children "different" names or different spellings.

Re: Do you know anyone with a VERY unique name?

My mom made up my middle name. It's Charon. I was the first born and she wanted to honor her father, Charles. So she made my middle name Charon and she pronounced it Charon with a hard Ch. I pronounce it as Sharon.

One of my cousin's children's names is Kenya. Another is Jayden, haven't heard that name often.

When my father had been in business, one of the services he had was to print ribbons for parties. One woman had come in to have ribbons printed for:

"Smurfette's Baptism"

No joke. How do we know that this was no joke? Abuot one year later, the same lady came in to print ribbons for:

"Smurfette's First Birthday"

I am convinced that drugs are VERY bad and that teenagers watch too much TV. Thus concludes my judgement.

Smurfette?! Chat Icon Some of these names are absolutely cracking me up Chat Icon

Whenever I see that name, I automatically assume that is pronounced Hey- sus. I never knew of anyone who used it the english way. I do that same thing with Jaime. I say High may instead of Jay me. Thats my own fault for assuming thoughChat Icon
