Breast Pumps

I was wondering if you girls are registering for a breast pump, or waiting to see how BF goes, or planning on renting one at first. I am so confused. The electric ones are so expensive. What situations are the manual ones sufficient?

I am rambling, I know Chat Icon

Thanks!

Re: Breast Pumps

I registered for the Medela Pump In Style. It's the only thing I didn't get off my registry, probably because it was the most expensive thing on there. It was recommended to me by 2 of my girlfriends who are baby making machines. One has 4 kids, the other is pregnant with number 4. They're the experts as far as I'm concerned.

Re: Breast Pumps

I'm going to test out BF first. My mom claims she had major issues due to her nipples Chat Icon so I'll try it. If it's going well - I'll have my mom or DH pick the Medela Pump In Style up for me. They carry it at Target.

Re: Breast Pumps

My sister registered for the Medela Pump In Style, no one got it for her. But she just had her baby at the end of november, and she is bf. With all the gift cards she got from the shower they went and picked it up and she loves it. It works great, easy to use and worth the money according to her. Hope this helps.

Re: Breast Pumps

ETS: A lot of places recommend you do not register for the pump since you cannot return it if you decide not to BF. As Roxy said, maybe it's something you could put aside gift cards for.

Re: Breast Pumps

I would definitely recommend renting a pump first, to make sure it works out. You can rent a hospital grade one for $25 a week.

Like someone else said, many stores will not take back a breast pump, even if it is unopened.

ETA: Also, I got my breast pump much cheaper on-line than what BRU was charging for them.

Re: Breast Pumps

I rented one at first, I had to pay 60.00 upfront, the insurance paid for the rest.

I had the isis hand pump from my shower, it worked perfect if I had to make a bottle or two.

Re: Breast Pumps

I loved my Medela PIS. I started pumping about 2 weeks after having Ds and used it for 5 months. It was well worth the money. I didn't register for it, I waited to see how I felt about BFing and then I had DH go out and buy it.

Re: Breast Pumps

I would also check your insurance coverage as a breast pump may be covered. I was able to get the Medela Pump in Style free of charge with just a prescription from my doc.

Re: Breast Pumps

Im going to get the Medela Swing. Its alot cheaper than the Pump in Style, but its still electric--it only has one pump though. Its about half the price and I figured since Ill be a SAHM I wont need the really expensive one.
If I was going back to work, I would have gotten the Pump In Style.

I was wondering the same thing about whether to buy it or not before you know if breastfeeding will be successful. My DH convinced me to get it in advance because at our breastfeeding class the woman said that it will be helpful within the first few days because of engorgement and can therefore help you be more successful at breastfeeding and more likely to continue doing it. I dont know if I would feel the same way if I was getting the more expensive one though.

Wow, Thats great what insurance company do you have?
I registered for the Medela pump in style but didn't receive it for my shower. But I think I probably will end up buying it online...much cheaper.

A mommy on here gave me this website to get my pump: lactationcare.com

it was great, cheaper than the stores, and i have given to others on here, who said they had a good experience with too.

Re: Breast Pumps

I had a Medela double electic pump. I think it was called the double select? Since I'm a SAHM and didn't need to pump often it was fine for me. I didn't think it was worth it to get the Pump in Style. I also had the Medela Harmony manual breast pump that I used occasionally. It was good if we were going away for the weekend or on vacation, but not for everyday use.

My DS had trouble latching on in the beginning so I had trouble establishing a milk supply. My LC had me pumping the first week or two to help build up my milk supply. I originally just had a manual pump, but I went out and bought the double electric when I came home from the hospital.

Re: Breast Pumps

Check with your insurance- some have lactation programs as part of their pre-natal/maternity program. You might be able to get a discount on a pump- my insurance allows me to get the Medela PIS for a $125 co-pay.

I used the Medela Pump in Style and is was worth it. I Breast fed my son for nine months and it worked great the whole time. I work 40 hours a week and needed a good pump. I am going to use it again when this baby comes. It is a little on the pricey side but well worth it. I don't think it was as pricey as others. I got the Medela Swing as well and did not like it at all. I hope this helps.

I also use the Avent Manual and liked that one too. I would recommand using both.

Re: Breast Pumps

I bought the Avent Uno and I like it but I find that the manual is more effective so I wish I didnt spend the extra money for the automatic.

I have Blue Cross/Blue Shield. It may depend on your specific plan, but it is worth looking into!
