I'm trying to prepare for living in a house. Currently we live in an apartment, so we extra money. Once we buy a house...not so much.
Do you find $300 is enough to get by?
I'm so freakin' scared!

You're supposed to have money left
We actually live in times of feast and famine. DH is self employeed and sometimes we get lots o money and sometimes we don't. It's hard to say how much money we have monthly. I generally judge things by the year, not the month (maybe the quarter if Im feeling frisky ). Somehow we still have enough money for stupid things, savings and spending so I guess things are ok

We are not house poor (though we own a home) we are daycare poor. I don't know how we are going to do it next year with 2
We were just talking about it this weekend and it will definitely be tight. Here's to hoping that a big incentive comes through and Mom retires between now and Sept.

Re: After paying all your monthly bills
We save $500 every month out of our f/t job paychecks and all the money from our p/t jobs goes into savings.
After that and the bills are paid, we have a couple of hundred to play around with each month. We never have anything left over b/c we always spend it all, on going out eat, buying things, etc.

Re: After paying all your monthly bills
I actually just re-did our budget now that we've moved into our home and our bills are different. After all the bills are paid, we have a little over $6,000 if you are counting savings and spending (and NOT counting 401(k) contributions). Most of that goes into savings, as we aren't really big spenders. However, we just put a lot of money into our home, so for the past several months, that money has gone to home repairs. We own a home, two cars (one paid for), and have student loan debt, 2 horses, etc. We work hard, live beneath our means, and really hope to retire very early...
We are very fortunate.

So funny you mention this - I am reading a book w/ some suggestions on keeping track of your finances, and this is one thing I need to do b/c I don't know! I need to keep track of when I take home and what I spend...

Re: After paying all your monthly bills
We don't keep much spending money for ourselves. After the mortgage and bills are paid we have about $3,000 left - after groceries, gas and eating out once a week that's closer to 2,000.
We each have about $100 per month as spending money - the rest goes into savings. I'm not much of a clothes buyer -I probably clothes shop twice a year? We tend to buy clothes/shoes when we need them, not just because. So if one of us needs a new pair of shoes or some clothes it doesn't come out of spending money, it comes out of savings. (I do have an addiction to fabirc because I love to quilt - so my spending $ goes to fabric where another person may use it on clothes) We also use the savings for house things - we just had the roof replaced so that was $7,000 and we are about to start a major remodel (kitchen and 2 baths) - it always seems like we never have enough money

Re: After paying all your monthly bills
After all the bills are paid, we have a significant amount of money left over. Most of this goes into the house fund, the rest is for spending, about $150-$200 for each of us.

Same here. When all is said and done we have about $5k-$6k at the end of every month. A big part of that is because my student loans are next to nothing because I consolidated at an amazing rate, because we underpaid for our house because it was an estate sale, and we did all the renovations ourselves, because we own our cars (bought them used) and because are expenses really are minimal. I think our biggest expense is daycare - DH and I just don't really buy a lot of "things".
We don't put the money into savings every month, except for my daughters 529 account - we keep it in a money market account and at the end of each tax season we shelter some of it away in our IRA's to reduce our tax liability and invest the rest in CD's or stocks.

Re: After paying all your monthly bills
i would say we have about $2-$3,000 left after all our "expenses" ( including eating out, and going out with our friends to movies, coffee shops, bars, etc). we own a house that we bought from his parents. we pay them the "mortgage" every month, and they gave us a good interest rate. ( they had to charge us interest for tax reasons). we also live below our means on other things, like i don't buy a ton of clothes at all, and we plan out meals so we don't spend much on groceries. i also am not super into decorating, so we don't spend a ton of money on things for the house- as long as its comfortable to live there and its clean, thats fine with me, it doesn't have to be a decorating showcase any renovations we do, DH does the work himself- it takes longer, but saves a lot of money in the long run. we also both live within 5 miles of our jobs, so we hardly spend anything on gas lately- i think its been about 2 weeks since i filled up we each have a car, but mine is the only one we're still paying for. i have student loans, but they're small, becasue i consolidated at a good rate. DH has no loans becasue hes a smarty pants and got a full ride to a school in state, and lived at home all 4 years. i'm sure once kids come, we'll be in worse shape, but for now, we're doing pretty well...

Re: After paying all your monthly bills
Hmm, I am not exactly sure, but we put $600 a month into our savings account after paying bills. And we still have money left over for spending and extra money in our checking.
We don't live beyond our means, I believe strongly in that.

I wasn't using the term "savings" to refer to a savings account. I use it to refer to our myriad of investments. Savings to me generally refers to our money market accounts, stocks, mutual funds, and other investment vehicles.
ETA - We don't have a traditional savings account. We earn more interest on our checking account than most traditional savings accounts. We DO have 2 money market accounts at two different banks, in addition to our other investments.

after we do bills and pay the nanny, we probably have $1200-1500 extra but we live below our means.

Re: After paying all your monthly bills
We should have a decent amount yet but, for the past two years we've had "one time" expenses each month between the wedding and the house.
The house related expenses (renovations, furniture, etc) are starting to slow down so we should be in good shape to start saving again.
We work on the side occasionally to get "fun" spending money which is helpful as well.

Sorry! Just, when most people refer to savings I infer that means a savings account! We don't have a traditional savings acount either - though we keep only enough for our bills in there, and like you, we have money market accounts that we put the overflow into. Stays in there until the end of the tax season...

Re: After paying all your monthly bills
it's hard for me to answer this question b/c my DH makes comission- so I never know how much it's going to be total
but for my part of the budget I have alot left over
I give myself $80 a week in cash and save over 30% of my salary a month (when I get paid 4 times) and more then 40% when I get 5 checks -( I get paid weekly)
I pay for everything but the rent and my DH car- he pays for that out his money- and this money we had about 40% of that left over for savings

No problem - just clearing that up b/c I see how it was confusing. It's way too much money to be sitting around earning 2% or less. I like my money to work for me!
