Sorry for all the questions pertaining to food but

As you noticed I love food being everything I ask or discuss pertains to it Chat Icon but, what is the issue with coldcuts? I know we can't have any processed meat and I know certain coldcuts are like bologna, salami. etc...but honey turkey or roasted turkey is cooked according to my local deli.

Is it okay to eat Boars Head honey turkey? I find myself craving it at times but not sure if I can eat it Chat Icon

I haven't eaten it yet...but I want to! I'm just nervous...so I was going to actually post something similar today!! I know my Dr. said as long as it comes from a reputable deli and to ask has it been open for awhile. If it's freshly open, it's fine!

Re: Sorry for all the questions pertaining to food but

The problem is that many cold cuts contain listeria that would not harm most healthy adults, but can harm a fetus. I never felt comfortable eating them, so I have not, though I was told they are safe if you microwave them.

My doctor said no cold cuts at all (except heated to steaming). I wouldn't trust a fresh package from a deli myself--the meat still could have listeria from the producer or from shipping.

Everyone has different views on this though. Many women on the board have eaten cold cuts with no problems.

Were you really? Too funny! Yes, that's what I would think, I mean it is cooked. Like you said, if the place is reputable and the meat hasn't been sitting out too long than why not.

Thanks for responding Chat Icon

I'm sure you're okay! At the beginning of my pregnancy I had a sandwich at a shower and I'm fine!!! Chat Icon

Most people on here say they eat sandwiches all the time!!

On Thanksgiving...I'm not eating the turkey solo...I'm going for a sandwich!

I don't think you should call your Dr. because you ate it once - unless it would make you feel better. I think you would know if something is up.
Honestly, don't worry, because the risk of lysteria is very small. So, personally, I didn't eat cold cuts through out the pregnancy, just in case, because I didn't want to worry. So, if you feel like you will worry, just don't eat it any more. But I wouldn't worry about the one time you ate, if something was wrong, you'd know it.

I agree--this is why I did not eat cold cuts. I just knew I would feel very concerned, and I don't love them enough to justify eating them. But I wouldn't worry about eating this once.

Call your doctor to get his/her views on this if you aren't going back soon, or ask at the next appt.

I had heard that it was ok, if it was heated to steaming, so I asked my ob and she said absolutely not, she told me I can have a sandwich waiting for me in the delivery room and eat it as soon as the baby is out, but until then, nothing.

To satisfy the craving, I have been having grilled chicken wraps, and turkey clubs(minus bacon) from the diner (its cooked turkey)

Re: Sorry for all the questions pertaining to food but

I asked my doctor about this and she said that as long as you get cold cuts from a place that has a high turnaround (like a busy deli or a grocery store deli counter). She said as long as you're not eating anything obscure that hardly anyone eats, that every once in a while it is fine to eat them. She also said that if you get cold cuts to not eat them after they have been in your house for 3 days. Turkey is one of the few things I've craved so I've had maybe 3 sandwiches in the 27 weeks I've been pregnant.

Everyone is different and every Dr is different.

Thank goodness, I feel so much better now. I got really nervous to be honest and called my doctor before even seeing your posts, sorry I'm a neurotic Chat Icon

The receptionist took down my name and telephone #, they must think I'm nuts but when you hear something that you shouldn't be doing and you did you tend to worry so I guess it's normal.

Thanks so much for all your advice!

Re: Sorry for all the questions pertaining to food but

I got this from babyfit.com: info on listeria
Listeria likes cold temps, so it doesn't matter if the meat is cooked already, it can still be contaminated at the deli.
My OB/GYN said no deli meats/hot dogs unless they were reheated until steaming.
Of course all I want is a turkey & swiss sandwich! I decided I'm going to buy turkey from the deli, nuke it at home and then put it in the fridge for an hour or so to cool it back down. From everything I've read, that should make it okay.

Thanks for the info. I think eating one slice won't harm my baby but I will definitely stay far away from it going forward. From what I hear listeria also grows on meats that have been in the deli for a while. The slice I ate from was from a fresh package, the guy in the deli opened it right in front of me which makes me feel comfortable.

I certainly wouldn't give it a second thought, espcially since it was a fresh package.

Me too.
I have eaten cold cuts here and there throughout. I only get boars head from a place like King Kullen or Stop and shop where they go through packages so regularly. Also once I get home I heat them just to be on the safe side.

thats my philosophy too, especially the second time around Chat Icon

everything in moderation - I can't worry about everything little thing I eat.
