When I went to my gyno appt and spoke about ttc...my dr. recommended that I be on prenatals for at least four months before ttc.
I guess, it just depends on the doctor.

I figured it couldn't hurt to start before I'm preggo.

that is what my dr. said as well

The internet sucks- you can't "read" emotion on a post. I didn't take your post as being mean at all~ maybe the exclamation point made it seem more curt perhaps?

HOWEVER, one thing I learned while on the TTC/PG boards- everyone's doctors have different views and give different (and sometimes conflicting) instructions. So- just be mindful of that when giving advice and you'll be golden.

My Dr. told me that my regular multi was enough and to take extra folic acid.

You don't have to take prenatals before but you do have to take folic acid.

Folic acid prevents spinal defects if taken BEFORE a pregnancy. I didn't take prenatals but I take extra folic acid. I took a multi and an extra folic acid.

See, this is not true. You do NOT have to take folic acid before pregnancy. Is it good to take it? SURE! But you don't HAVE to take any vitamin. How many women get pregnant without knowing they are...tons!! And are they on folic acid and prenatals? Prob not.

I didn't take one vitamin until I got my BFP. It is perfectly fine.

I'm sorry, I am very sensitive to this..it isn't right to make false claims such as "need to take..." because it puts worry in people that needn't be there. Like browneyedgirl said.....women were having healthy babies LONG before prentals and folic acid supplements.

There is a lot of folic acid in the foods you eat as well..important to remember!

Honestly...it is better to be on FA BEFORE you get pregnant. Folic acid stores are depleted every day so if you are not on it when you get pregnant, yes you do increase your risk of spina bifida slightly. As I posted before, some people even get enough in their diets naturally-but you just don't know. Better safe than sorry. Of course there are a million stories-I did not take folic acid, pre-natals, drank, smoked etc. and my baby is FINE...but that may not happen for everyone. Personally I take FA every day.

Thank you so so much girls!! All of you have made me feel better. Michael was calming me down today. We did stop at Target and got there brand Pre-Natal Vitaimns. He needs to crush them for me because it's hard for me to swallow them but it's only one a day so we can handle that. This week I need to start calling OB/GYNs. Anyone know OB/GYN's that deliever at St. Charles Hospital. Thank you again.

Re: What is the deal with Pre-Natal Vitiamns?

Update: Thank you so much girls for everything. We are both feeling so much better.

We have learned a couple of lessons. The main one is that we can make our choices. We keep on getting used to this one.

Everything is taken care of. The explanination point is what got me and something was worded that is why I took this to heart and emotionally but now I know she did not mean it like that. I only use explanation points when I am excited and happy for all of you on the boards.

Thank you so much everyone. Now let's talk about happy good fun stuff.

It was suggested that I start on prenatals prior to TTC - this article gives a good explanation as to why it's suggested/important.

I go to Suffolk OB/GYN as well. I have seen Dr. Edwards a few times when my regular (Dr. Giammarino) was not available. They are both WONDERFUL!

Okay, first of all I didn't see the post on LIF and I just went by what the OP said. Now that I see the post I agree that snowflake was not being mean. I am sorry I said that.
As for folic acid.. Sure not taking folic acid before you are pg is not going to cause spina bifida but not taking before you are pg is not going to prevent it... KMIM. My mom is a labor and delivery nurse and I have had it drummed into me that EVERY WOMAN of child bearing age needs a daily vitamin with FA whether you are trying to get PG or not. There was even a whole bunch of signs in english and spanish in the subways a while back explaining this. They basically said that even if you don't plan on getting pg for a long time to take FA.

Look is a lack of folic acid going to cause spinal defects... no??? But it won't prevent it either. I have been taking FA since I was 16 because women are supposed to. I don't understand why people are so reluctant to take a simple vitamin everyday. If you haven't been taking and you are pg.. that is okay. Spinal defects are rare but you should take it everyday from the day you get the BFP.

I didn't mean to make anyone feel bad (I am truely sorry if I did)but the OP wanted to know why some dr's recommend prenatals. FA is the major reason. BUT you can get it from a reg. multivitamin.

Re: What is the deal with Pre-Natal Vitiamns?

I was skimming through here, and also had this little tidbit of info.... Some women after BFP have issues with the prenatal making them sick. My doctor told me that if I had started taking them while TTC my body may have gotten used to them making the transition easier...

Hey Charlotte,

Even though you have resolved your issue it can be a learning experience for others. Don't feel bad about the post. This is NOTHING compared to some debates I've seen on this boardChat Icon

Re: What is the deal with Pre-Natal Vitiamns?

Melissa,
Thank you so much for mentioning that. I thought that I opened a can of worms but in the long run I did not because I basically asked a question that I did not know and recieved many answers. We now know that it can be either or. I am taking Pre-Natal Vitiamns at the moment which was my decision but I also know that it is not a big deal if I did not take them until I knew I was pregnant.

I am happy that my question is helping others out. Melissa, thank you so much for mentioning that to me.

Re: What is the deal with Pre-Natal Vitiamns?

My dr prescribed prenatals to me back in May when I told her we were going to start TTC in July. She said, women should take prenatals at least three months prior to getting pg so the vitamins are well in your system.

Although I don't believe it's mandatory I decided not to take anything. When I got pg in September my doctor put me on prenatals immediately. I explained that I never started them, she didn't seem to mind.

Every dr is different but to answer your question it is by choice.
