The overwhelming majority of peds say not before 4 months.

Years ago kids were started on cereal very early, that's where your mom and grandma are getting it from. The AAP endorses waiting. Some believe an early start can lead to food allergiesChat Icon

I'd discuss it with your ped because 7 weeks is very early.

ETA: Around 6 to 7 weeks they go through a growth spurt so that can account for his hunger.

This is what I've been telling them - but they are looking at me like I'm crazy as he is crying and chewing his hands. Chat Icon

My mother is from Ireland - by 7 weeks they are eating mashed potatoes so it is really hard to convince her that formula should be enough to satisfy him.....
I'll talk to the DR. Maybe he'll have some insight! Thanks!

DS has been chewing his hand since he was 8 weeks. In his case.. he was already starting teething.

He is probably going through a growth spurt.

Def talk to you ped before feeding DC anything but BM or formula.

You are the mommy and what you say goesChat Icon

Just blame everything on the Ped. I must have said... "No, the ped said...." about 10000X in the first few months even when it was all my ideaChat Icon

ETA: I agree, it's the start of teething.

Re: How old was your DC when you started them on cereal?

My DD is 6 weeks and I have already started her. DS was the same age. They seemed constantly hungry and never satisfied, especially at night. My mom reccomended it, after all, we all started at that age. It worked wonders for me. My kids began to sleep better at night because they were not hungry within an hour of eating. Go with your gut. If you are uncomfortable, don't do it. But, if you try it and it works, why not?

I think this whole business about starting cereal early is going to lead to all these problems later in life, is a bunch of crap. That is just my opinion, but when I hear all these doctors scolding mothers who start before 6 months, all I do is Chat Icon .

Again, this worked for me, but may not work for you. Just go with what you think is the right way and you will do great!! Chat Icon
