Yeah, maybe they are just private but I've never seen any lovey dovey looking pictures.
(not that I really keep up, though)
They look like 2 people that happen to be going in the same direction.
But apparently he was dining with her and his mom, before the VMAs.
ETA- I like her hair too!

I believe they are together. They probably just shy away from the attention, esp. when the cameras are around.
My DH and I aren't very affectionate in public. We're not all lovey-dovey and clingy. We certainly don't make out in the produce section of a supermarket like Kate Hudson and Dax Shepard. We do hold hands though. 
And if we were in the public eye as much as these two were, we'd probably be more hands-off too.
